olympus e400

DH has just won one these through a work promotion. It's the kit with the extra lens.

I have absolutely no idea about proper photography and have only just worked out how to use our panasonic lumix DMC TZ1 and that is basic.

Looking forward to learning though, any tips for a beginner

Read the manual ! sounds basic but amazing those that do not.

They are given free with the camera so tend to be discarded, if we had to pay for them we would read them :-)

It will give you good basic instructions on how to use it.

Thats a great prize!

Assuming this is your first family DSLR and you want to get the most out of it then Id recommend you read "Understanding Exopsure" by Bryan Peterson. This will explain in simply terms how to get the most from using the manual controls on your camera and very soon you will be able to judge what settings to use.

Most DSLRs have whats called Aperture and Shutter priority modes and these are good to get to grips with first. Shutter speed is pretty easy to understand - basically a fast speed will freeze motion and a slow speed will blur moving objects. The camera will set everything else for you on this mode and its a great one to learn on. You can even cheat and get a setting in auto mode then in shutter priority, try increasing and decreasing the shutter speed to see what happens. The same with Aperture priority (basically, how much light is allowed onto the sensor) confusingly, small numbers like f/2.8 mean the aperture is wide open and lots of light going in and of course larger numbers like f22 mean the aperture is smaller and not so much light going in. Each "stop" or number lets in twice as much light as the previous one. Sounds hard, but experiment and you will find it surprisingly easy!

The best advice is to USE IT and dont be afraid to come off of the auto setting! You can only learn from bad photos and the beauty of digital means you can really muck about with the settings and learn from them. The settings are saved with the digital file, so you can look at them afterwards and realise that your picture might have been better with a faster shutter speed or larger aperture (for example).

Good luck - and congrats to hubby!

well he's got it and it's amazing. Have not got off the auto modes yet, but we are reading the manuals and watching the DVD that came with it and are slowly learning.

Off to find some stunning Scottish scenery to shoot today

Hope it goes well! I'm jealous - I've just got the Olympus E330, but only have the one lens for it - I really want that 40-150 lens - but I want to go to WDW even more!

If you need a memory card for it make sure you go for compact flash, not XD as XD are terribly slow. Unless you want to use the panoramic feature that only works with the XD cards.
