Terminally Ill Brother-in-Law
Hi, im a new member and have joined theDIBB as I have been told this is the place to get answers from the people who know!
We hope to be travelling on 24th November for 2 weeks, theres 10 of us in all, 6 adults and 4 kids. Jamie (my brother-in-law) is terminally ill with a glioblastoma brain tumour and has around 12 months left to live. A very kind family from our home town of Barrow-in-Furness has given us use of his luxury villa for two weeks which we are delighted to be able to use. Now the problem we have been facing is for travel insurance. We have just had a quote for £7,000 for a fortnight. Has anyone been in a similar situation and can perhaps advise where to look. Thank you. |

The reason it is so high is because if your brother in law sadly passes away while you are on holiday they would have to pay for you to fly home. My dad passed away in 2006 and I was told before he died that I would have to notify the insurance company because if I went on holiday knowing my dad was terminally ill and I hadn't told them our insurance would be null and void and they wouldn't have flown me home. Sadly he passed away before I had to renew my insurance. It is a standard thing on insurance now I'm afraid.

This factsheet from cancerbackup.org might have something to help you. There is a list of specialist brokers for travel insurance for people with cancer. I hope you can find something suitable although many insurers will not cover someone with a terminal diagnosis.

Hi sorry to hear you BIL is ill, what grade of glioblastoma does he have? This may effect the insurance, as they have all different prognosis. They are graded 1-4. if you know that then when you ring tell them, and see if it puts the premium down a little.
Is he having any treatment for it? |

maybe some kind of fundraiser to help pay for his insureance is an idea?

Hello and thank you. Jamies tumour is a Grade 4 which means he only has approximately 12 months to live, its inoperable but they are in the process of trying to slow it down with radiotherapy and chemotherapy at the moment. I know we have been extremely lucky finding anyone who will insure him at all!

Thank you for that information, I am going to ring the ones on the list I havent already tried. I know we have been really lucky finding any company to insure him. A few we have tried have offered to look into in a month before we are due to fly but failing that we will defo pay the £7,000 as its too good an oportunity to miss. Thanks again!

Hello to you too! There has been a fundraiser for Jamie and Clare a couple of weeks ago so they will defo pay the £7,000 if we cant anything else. We are really lucky we have found anyone who would be prepared to insure him. Its a good job I like a challenge!

I am sorry to hear about your brother in law. Make sure you have a good look around for insurance as cost's will differ. Make sure you get the right insurance that covers him though. Try typing in travel insurance with glioblastoma brain tumour. Good luck and i hope you have a holiday to remember.
