West coast trip 2009 - Part 9

Today we get up nice and early take breakfast and head off to San Diego Animal Park, takes about 1/2 hour to get to, approx 30 miles.

The park is well set out and not too busy even though it was a Saturday, the Southern California City Pass tickets are good for the Safari tour too, which is a saving as they need to be purchased in addition to the admission ticket otherwise, either $4/6 per person.

Anyway the safari takes about 25 minutes on a land train, get to see Lions, Deer, antalope, giraffes, Rhinos, the driver and tour guide did a great job and even managed to explain why a male giraffe was drinking the urine of a female!

Some of the views were amazing, especially from the Condor vista.
Caught the bird show, with all manner of birds swooping down over the audiences heads.

Paid the additional fee of $4 per person to do the dinosaurs section, you get a passport which you can stamp according to the dinosaur you visit, good for DD as she enjoyed collecting the stamps.

We left the park around 15:30 to go to Walmart to pick up some supplies, beer, soft drinks and snacks mainly, then back to the hotel for a dip in the pool.

One thing for Old town, there are a lot of Mexican restaurants, with that I mean than the only alternative was an Italian and 1 burger joint. If you dont like Mexican then best stay elsewhere or be prepared to take the car.

Tried a different Mexican restaurant tonight, it had only been open around 1 week and didnt have its liquor license yet so had to make do with soft drinks, anyway the food was good, nachos as an apetiser, tortilla soup to follow, then chix fajitas and chix molcajete (this is the dish served on a volcanic rock) and chicken tenders for DD.
Price for this was $47, pretty good value.

Tomorrow we are going to catch the bus to USS Midway, take lunch at the Kansas city BBQ (remember Top Gun! ) and then see the Gaslamp district etc.

Sounds like another fab day. Good to know they have chicken strips for the kids at the resturants. MY DS only likes chicken strips and burgers! Looking forward to hearing about USS Midway and Kansas city, as these are on our list of things to do.
