Wofford Heights -here we come!

Index now online

So I've retired. Early retirement. After 43 years I'm no longer a wage slave. Thankfully, I did all the right things with my pensions so I'll be reasonably comfortable. Darrin, my OH, has his own business (I. T.) and despite the so called recession he seems to be making a real success of it.

We decided this milestone in my life should be marked accordingly and so a holiday had to be in the offing. So, for two weeks we lurched in our choosing from Egypt to Mauritius to Mexico and back again. Then we realised there's one place that means so much to us and that's the good old USA. We didn't want to go back to WDW as we'd rather wait until all that mess in Fantasyland is actually back to being Fantasyland.

Earlier this year we had visited Disneyland California and thanks to our great buddy, Tim from Arizona and his partner Jimmie, we had an amazing time. The Grand Californian Hotel is glorious with its soaring beams and delightful hearth fireplace. A good dose of the Mouse is essential.

Before that we have somewhere else we must visit. We just scratched the surface in San Diego, only having a day there and realised we had to return. We managed dinner with Amy (Aims) and her husband and they were quick to tell us how much we'd missed. Hopefully, we can meet up again. Plus, we had stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado - it's the one where they filmed "Some like it hot" with Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe. We wished we'd spent more time there - we loved the place. So some time in So Cal including Disney is on the cards.

Then there is Vern and Melinda. They are two delightful people we met on a steam train from Durango to Silverton when we visited Colorado in 2006. They live in a place called Wofford Heights which is some 48 miles north east of Bakersfield. It stands by Lake Isabella and is kind of on the way to Death Valley and subsequently Las Vegas. It's always been an ambition to stay at the Venetian on the Strip and so that is on the list.

So a lot to sort out. The flights have been booked with BA - Business Class both ways. The sheer joy of being able to sleep on a flatbed is worth every single penny. I know some will disagree but this is a luxury trip and we are not skimping on anything.

So come 3rd February 2012 we'll be on Flight 0273 from Heathrow to San Diego (Lindbergh Field)... can't wait! Sadly we will be returning on Feb 18th.
