Tipping etc in Europe?

What is the accepted practice as regards tipping waiting staff etc in Germany please, I don't want to upset anyone

Some stuff wot I found...

Germans generally round up �1 when tipping. However, tipping is not practiced as liberally as it is elsewhere---most Germans only tip in restaurants and bars, or when they are the beneficiary of a service, such as a taxi ride.

Note that tips in Germany are not left lying on the table, but handed directly to the server when you pay. If you don't want any change, say Das steht so (dahs SHTAYT zo).

The bill you receive at a hotel, restaurant, cafe or bar often includes a service charge already. A tip is an indication of your satisfaction � 5% is average, whereas 10% indicates exceptional service. Tip taxi drivers about 5%, and porters and others who assist you with baggage one Euro per item.
