Just booked Canadian Rockies - any tips?
I've just booked flights for myself and the boys for August 2006 to Calgary. Going to spend a fortnight driving around the Rockies - Banff, Jasper etc. Anybody been and got any tips of where to stay, what to do?
Also anyone flown with Canadian Affair from Manchester?

Oh, how wonderful. Six of us "did" this as a coach-trip a couple of years ago and it was so wonderful. Scenery is spectacular. Do visit Lake Louise, it's gorgeous. The trees around each side of the lake looked to me as if they had been combed!
The Sulphur Mountain cable car at Banff is well worth the short trip up for the views from the top. A walk on the Athabasca Glacier is a great experience. You will need to take a snowmobile - here's a link Athabasca Snowmobile We would really really like to go again and I have it in the back of my mind that may be next year ... I'm not jealous, I'm not jealous. Really I'm not. |

Try the Ptarmigan in Banff its in a great location in the centre of town (also handy for the ski bus - but it's not that time of year when you are going!)
It's a while since I went to Jasper but found the Astoria very good. Afraid the only 'trips' that I went on were skiing every day... You can see the some webcams here skibig3/onmountain/webcams.html p.s. The Canadians pronounce Norquay as 'Norkway' not 'Norkey'! Edited at 12:24 PM. |

I was in Banff this winter and it is amazing - we even had a wolf cross the road we were driving down. There are signs everywhere warning of animals (bears, wolves ect). It really is amazing scenery and I would go back tomorrow.
There are loads of hiking and biking trails everywhere. Would love a trip on the Rocky Mountain Railroad as that looks great. You will have such a good time! |

I got married in Banff 3 years ago.
Definitely go to Sulphur Mountain it's fantastic. Also the Athabasca Glacier is amazing. We stayed at the Caribou Lodge in Banff, beautiful hotel and the restaurant was great. The steak was the best I've ever tasted. I'd really recommend staying there. There is also a restaurant in Banff and Calgary called The old Spaghetti Factory, it was really good value and we ate there quite a few times. Don't know how old your kids are but Calgary zoo was good and there is a shopping centre in Calgary called the Chinook centre which we liked. There is also the dinosaur park, but we didn't go there, meant to be good though. I can't wait to go back we had such a great time there. Hoping to go back in 2007 when dd2 is a bit older. |
