Laptop to TV issue

I use a HDMMi thingy to connect laptop to TV at home works fine

I used a HDMI thingy last term in class worked fine

Boss uses laptop to work TV works fine

Mine no longer works fine at work. Picture no sound

Bizarre

Any suggestions as to what the issue might suddenly be?

I have encountered this problem when wanting to watch football on TV rather than the Laptop, I found that the HDMI plug was not fully connected to the Laptop and on another occasion I found I had not unmuted the TV or the Laptop, not sure which.

Sometimes there is a configuration under the sound settings that directs the sound from the laptop to the possible outputs (internal speaker, headphones, line out etc.). Often this is automatic, but I wonder if these settings may have been changes where it doesn't reroute the audio to the hemp when you plug it in.
Or on the TV, there may be an audio setting to configure where to take the sound from - you would want the HDMI socket you are using on the TV.
Just a thought.

if its windows microsoft did a recent update which added privacy to sounds, this has caused issues for some. check your sound output (just type sound settings in the bar bottom left) without the hdmi and then plug it in and see it the hdmi pops up as a choice.
