Hire car or DME?
we had a fly drive for our last Florida holiday as did Disney, Universal and Kennedy space centre but next year we are staying in the Disney bubble. Is it better to pay for a hire car (approx. £300 as family of 5) or just rely on DME and transport within Disney? We only used the hire car to get from airport to Disney, one trip to Walmart during our Disney stay, getting from Disney to Universal hotel, Universal Hotel to Kennedy space centre then back to MCO.
Our main concern is how busy will it be at check in if we use MDE? and obviously is there anyone whos used DME and wished they'd paid for a hire car? TIA |
Gather you mean DME and not MDE 😁.
Personmelly we would have a car if we stayed for 2 weeks on property as it gives more flexibility and the chance to eat off site or go shopping whenever we wanted but people do stay at Disney without a car and cope fairly well. You could always hire a car once you are at Disney if you feel the need to. |
We’ve stayed on site, both with and without a car, and will be on site next May. We’ve decided not to hire a car and if we’re desperate to get off site we’ll get a taxi/Uber. You do need a slightly different mindset and a journey takes as long as it takes, but it means we take adavantage of the many alcoholic beverage options!

we did rosen inn at point Orlando with a car 3 weeks
3 weeks CBR with a car for the middle week and last year 2 weeks cbr and no car! Yep a Disney centric hol is no problem using Disney transport - with the odd uber/lyft for shopping runs. DME from the airport is a breeze, remember to fill in the online for to book it even if I had a car I wouldn't take it to mk, what a faff... get the bus right to the door. |

We usually use the DME but sometime just hire a car for 4 days during the holidays for any off-site visits like Universal or shopping but last time we did hire the car but ended up not using much as we use Disney transport. I would see how many days off-site then look to see if its cheaper to hire the car or taxi's.

Not having a car is fine if on site, just Uber for those couple of trips off. Alternatively just hire for part of the holiday via the Disney Car Centre, Alamo, same prices as airport ( mines less next year) they pick you up.

We stay onsite Disney and find the buses simple to use and efficient. I have noticed the car parks seem a lot further from the park entrance than the bus stops so therefore I think the buses are the best option.
Uber is easy to use and very cheap for the odd off site trip. |
Staying on-site, not planning on using DME but will Uber to/from the airport and if we want to leave the bubble. Most likely just a Target run. :d:

DME is great for the airport runs - means you can have a tipple on the way over the pond without worry, and it sets the scene for the holiday :)
We stay onsite in Disney, but still get rent a car for the middle period of the holiday - runs to International Drive for eats, Busch Gardens a couple of times on our last trip, Universal for a mid-holiday break in a Universal hotel... if we did the maths, it would no doubt work out cheaper just using Uber (since we've no plans for doing Busch Gardens in 2018), but I like the freedom of a car to jump into no a whim, so I'll not punish myself with the maths! ;-) |
