Are YouTube pushing towards making everyone pay

I don’t monetise my channel as it is just a hobby, but anyone wanting to make a living on YouTube face an uphill battle. Monetisation of the channel is getting worse and worse. YouTube is now adding more and more adds to the vids. One vid I watched recently had five lots of adds. Two adds each time and one you cannot skip. Unless a creator changes it then it makes vids all but impossible to watch. There is a strong rumour that this is YouTube, in a roundabout way getting viewers to go premium where you pay so much a month. This is great for YouTube but creators get even less money from premium subscriptions than from add revenue. It is a mess

If it goes this way I'd rather do a Patreon for the half dozen content creators I watch regularly. At least that way they get a fair share of the money.

I opted out of midrolls on our videos the minute I read the email they sent through but if I was asked if I was 100% confident that none of our videos had them I couldn't honestly say no. There's no way to check but individually
