Jetlag - advice please

Hi all :)

Flying back Friday evening  after a week in Orlando, we usually are here for a fortnight, just wondering if jetlag is significantly different if only here for seven nights? Planning to take natural sleeping US tablets from tomorrow night, is this a good idea? Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Kev

I would imagine that your return jet lag will be worse after only 7 days in the US?

Your body clock may have just settled into it’s new routine after 7 days; most then have a further 7-14 days of ‘normality’ before flying home; however, you’re putting your body through further body clock/time zone confusion when it had just gotten into the swing of things!

Anyway, some find staying up as late as possible (normal bedtime if you can last that long) on the day you land home works for them; some find having a sleep as soon as they get home works for them; some find going to work & back to their normal routine ASAP works for them; some find having a day or two off after getting home works for them; in short, everyone is different; some handle jet lag & overcome it quicker than others!
Depends what has worked for you in the past.

No idea if sleeping pills are a good idea.

Melatonin gummies from Walmart worked great for me. Took them 3 nights when we got back. Slept each night 11-6 and was back to normal without the tablets for night 4.

Sleep till 2 but not after for me.

Although I've done 2 week long trips, one was easier on jet lag, the other hit me so hard!

Just go easy on yourself

I've found not eating or drinking on the plane really helps on the way back. So a good meal and a beer at the airport, then just water/juice onboard. I also take a sleeping tablet, which helps me to doze and relax even if I'm not flat out.

I also have a couple of hours sleep when I get home.

In theory, shorter trip should be less jetlag, but it depends if you are "fully adjusted" to US time. In similar circumstances, I've gone to bed around 9pm for the week in Orlando and got up early every day. That's only a 2.00am bedtime UK time. Your body can shift 1.5hours a day without issue, so it reduces the effects when you get home. If you can sleep on the flight home, that should help and then I stay up once landed until a decent bedtime in the UK. If I sleep during the day, I'm bound for jetlag...

Good luck

Staying up as late as possible to get back in sync with UK time. I’m always a wimp and get straight in bed but this year we got stuck on the M25 for 4 hours and it actually really helped!

I suffer terribly with sleep generally and jet lag when flying East really effects me, what is odd is that I can deal with the 8 hours from California far better than the 5 from Florida.

Last time was the best I have ever been maybe got 2 hours nap on the plane (lest not pretend its sleep unless you are in Club) landed at about 9am and then stayed up until midnight, at 10pm I was really struggling so I went out for a walk and walked an hour away from home so I had to walk an hour back. I felt like ≈≈≈≈ my eyes went I was groggy and in a haze but I slept though until 7 and then had no problems.

This year we went to centre parcs in Netherlands and I didn't suffer from Jet lag at all no doubt I will after Brexit :)

Thanks everyone for your advice.

We don't go back to work until next Wednesday so have some time to get back to normal.

We have been asleep by 10 pm here and usually awake by 7 am.

We've got about a two hour drive back home from Gatwick.

We have some melatonin tablets and have used these in the past.

DW usually has a sleep when back home whereas I try and stay awake, we then go to bed as late as we can, usually after 10 pm.

Haven't suffered too badly in the past so fingers crossed this time...

I had zero jet lag this time,

Landed at Heathrow at 9am with little sleep, drove 250 miles back to west yorkshire, unpacked the car, went to supermarket, sorted a few bits and bat's out, then went out for my mates birthday at 6pm rolling in at 4am smashed !

Slept till about 10am, then went to bed at normal time..

Jet lag was least of my worries, the hangover was brutal.
