You can buy office for Mac. At totally compatible with office on a windows machine.

Does it have to be word? Apple have their own equivalent software (though the name escapes me at the moment) their excel equivalent is called numbers

Pages and Numbers aren’t as easily compatible. If she has to share work with others in Word format I would get office.

I use Pages on my Mac and documents can be saved and exported in Word and as a pdf.

Look at the student options for Office 365 which gives you word through a web browser.

See post further down.

OP. Perhaps what you’re being advised is the PC version of Office will not work on an Apple (which is correct). As above you need to buy the MAC version but once you do the documents you produce can be opened by anyone with a PC or a MAC and likewise any stuff you previously created on a PC you will be able to open on your Apple.

That’s the online version. Which to be fair will probably do the trick

Yes it is and will more than suffice for most. Some schools also allow you to install the full version as well.

No point paying for something you don't need to.

Has the advantage it is always backing up to the cloud as you go, so no need to remember to save updates.
