NYC and vegas
 

I am in the very early stages of planning next years big birthday trip for me and DH. We want to do New York and Vegas next Easter for about 10 days and I have quite a few questions-
Which one first?
How long at each?
Book separate or package?
Roughly how much for internal flights and how far in advance are they on sale?
Recommendations for hotels, tours etc in both cities?
Want to do Grand Canyon, what are the ‘not to be missed’ highlights?
Have found flights for just under £500 each with Thomas cook is this a good price?

I have done New York and Vegas in one trip and you do waste a lot of time travelling. As you’re only there for ten days have you thought about doing a two centre trip of places closer by?

We always said if we do west coast again we will split the flight and land east coast side 1st .the 11 hour flight is too much for us

I'd probably do it the other way. Get the longest flight out of the way first and then cut the journey home with s stop off in the east coast.

For Vegas I can recommend the Cosmopolitan. Just back. Loved it. We're all 40s.

We have been to NYC twice, 2012 and last year, and Vegas once - 2016.
We are in our 50's.

Depends very much what you like with Vegas. We liked the hotels (fantastic but price depends very much on what's happening on your dates), we stayed in Vdara - beside Cosmopolitan - and can confirm the Cosmo looked fantastic.

We also liked the shows, and the food and just generally sightseeing in the hotels - but we are not drinkers or gamblers. We were there 4 nights and thought that was enough.
It can be very hot depending on when you are going.
We drove to the Grand Canyon West Rim, stopping at Hoover Dam and enjoyed it. Never did the helicopter tour or the Skyway walkway - but really enjoyed it.
Have not been to South Rim - but supposed to be the best of the 2, but better staying overnight there.

NYC is great - tons to do.

We did Vegas in our 50s too .we were in bed by midnight so probably missed all the fun !
We enjoyed seeing the hotels and the strip and had a go on the slits in the casinos but 2 nights was enough. We drove from la and just loved the drive for the scenery

Vegas first, make use of the time difference on the way back.

For Grand Canyon, you really want the South rim, not West. Ideally with 1 night on the national park

You could get a cheaper off strip hotel for the first night and use the early wake up to do the 4 hour drive to the South Rim. Spend the day there and do a sunset. You could then get a start back the next morning doing Hoover Dam on the way back and check into a strip hotel mid afternoon.

I would them do 3-4 nights in Vegas and use the remaining time for New York.

We flew in and out of Vegas for our trip to the NOrth Rim, Bryce and Zion National Parks. The North Rim is more remote (and IMHO the best entrance to the Grand Canyon. ) Bryce and Zion geologically seem to be in very different worlds from the rest of the US. We did 12 days with no time in Vegas (we drove down the strip-my kids hated it and didn't want to get out of the car) and it wasn't enough. Could have spent a lot more time.

The Grand Canyon is amazing. Spend some time looking around. Driving around Utah between the parks is also beautiful.
