Own car hire excess insurance

Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere...
When I hire a car in the UK I always take out my own car hire excess insurance, is this acceptable in Florida?
We usually fly BA flydrive and all car insurance included at a reasonable price. We have looked at VH however their insurance costs seem excessive to me taking a similar flydrive to around £300 more.
Any advice greatfully received.

It is - however you will need to check the cover offered by the hire company and the cover offered by the excess company to make sure there is no "gap"

Often most cars that UK websites offer for hire in the US cover full insurance anyway so in most cases the excess cover is not required (this is not the case with Virgin Flydrives - where the basic cover is just short of worthless and often its cheaper to forget to pick up the included car and get a fully covered car from another provider than it is to upgrade the included cars insurance)

Floridavisitor has summed it up well. However you need more than excess Insurance for a US rental. What you need is full CDW and SLI coverage with the SLI being $1.000.000 worth to cover any 3rd party claims
There is no excess payable if you take out a hire via a UK Company unlike Europe and elsewhere

If you look on page 2 or 3 of the car forum threads you will spot other threads on stand alone insurance which is what you are alluding to as opposed to excess insurance.

Bear in mid if you DIY insurance you will still have to pay circa $100 for taxes and other fees out there, that cannot be avoided.
