Car Hire in Greece

After considering Barbados, we are pretty sure now we will be going to Greece in a few days!

I consider myself to be an expert on most things Florida but I am an absolute novice when it comes to Europe!

I’m looking at car hire and the insurance cover offered as standard. It’s quoted as ‘Basic collision damage protection’. Has anyone who has hired a car taken additional insurance and if so, what level of cover.

Many thanks.

Often better to just take out an excess insurance policy than try to get the right level of cover.

You get the excess cover separately to the policy from the rental.

Is it a standard excess policy or are there different levels of cover offered?

We have used carhireexcessinsurance previously. You must buy it before you go.

I have always found in Greece that tyres and undercarriage are not covered as standard. If you think you may be going off road or on more rural roads either check, or make sure it is covered on the car hire excess Insurance.

Where are you off to? The mainland, a big city or a smaller island?

You just need cover that is at least equal to the maximum excess of the rental company.

Hoping to head to Corfu. Haven’t been to Greece for over 30 years!

Take out the extra insurance to cover tyres and undercarriage. We had a tyre burst when we were in Kefalonia. The car hire company only charged us €31 but it could have been worse.

I'd say take extra insurance... we were in Zakynthos 2 weeks ago and a random motorcyclist drove into the back of us while we were sitting at a set of traffic lights. He scratched the bumper and just drove off after briefly getting off to 'inspect'. In perfect English he said he couldn't see anything wrong, jumped back on and drove away. Thankfully I have pictures of both him, his bike and the number plate. The car already had plenty of knocks around the same area, so we got away with it - but could have been a different story if they had spotted it. We did have additional insurance as we take an annual policy.
