Kyoto what area to stay?

Planning out an itinerary for next year/2022. I’m thinking we will go from Tokyo to Kyoto and then to Osaka where we are due to fly home from. Where is the best area to stay? If we get the bulletin train from Tokyo what station do we arrive in? Any hotels walkable from there?
Thanks for any help... may have a lot of questions coming up!

Sure others who stayed will jump in here, we did a day trip only, but have a search of the videos of "thisNatasha" - I find her really great for my trips and know she has visited / stayed in Kyoto on some of her visits.

We took the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto and did (there and back) in a day.

For our upcoming trip in May (if it goes ahead!) we are doing a day trip to Osaka this time from Tokyo, thought if they open Nintendo World I might work on them for a longer visit ;)

Thankyou, Ill take a look at her videos.
Do you know if you can take a decent sized suitcase on the bullet trains? We are a family of five and don’t travel lightly! We’d have to take our suitcases with us from Tokyo to Kyoto and then to Osaka.
We want to do universal too... is it a one day park?

They changed the rules on cases you can take on bullet train - small is fine, medium booked but Large a no no.

I think the reason why is that most Japanese do not lug big cases around with them, they use luggage transfer services we get in there the next day type of thing, and only take small cases on trains with things they might need that "day" - change of clothes etc etc.

We lugged our cases on train from Hilton Tokyo Bay to Shibuya when we moved lol

Universal is possibly a 1 day part WITHOUT the new Nintendo - BUT it gets amazingly busy with huge lines - so you would need to research a bit on times to visit adn try to avoid weekends and public holidays.

TDR Explorer web site is a great bible for visits to Asia theme parks - and think it was only last week he did videos and reports from Universal.

We stayed at a hotel near Kyoto Station (thats where you arrive in the Shinkansen from Tokyo). There are quite a few hotels near the station (there is one in the station). Kyoto station is amazing in itself and we found it a useful base as we took day trips to Hiroshima, Nara and Himeji. The bus terminus is outside the station which take you all over Kyoto.

It does not take long at all to travel to Osaka from Kyoto.

Is Osaka not the station BEFORE Kyoto on the train?

Goes to look at the map...

No it is the one AFTER Kyoto :)

Did you take a case on the bullet train then?

Thanks, I’ll have to look into that then a bit more about the luggage, do they give dimensions of what they class as a medium case? We have 3 daughters who will be 20, 18 and almost 16 so could have a problem 😂
Off to have a look...

Yes. We were there last year and stayed in Tokyo then moved to Kyoto for 5 nights but as we were returning to Tokyo we asked if we could leave some of our luggage at the hotel (as we were returning to the same hotel). They agreed so we only took one suitcase between us to Kyoto. There was no size restriction last year on the Shinkansen.

We are looking to take the plunge and book again tonight for next May!
