Triple Treat Tour July 2016 Day7 Part 1 Memorial Walk From Lincoln to the White House
The previous day is HERE
Saturday 9 July We were somewhat rudely awakened just after 3 by our neighbour Yes she of the un necessarily loud shrieksome voice had surpassed herself by inviting friends back :( Drunk people, you are so not quiet when you laugh :nonono: It was just beyond a joke They were really really loud 30 minutes later and no sign of any common sense invading their chardonnay brains, Andy rang down to the lobby to complain. It was just not funny. We heard the security guy appear on the floor about 10 minutes later And then it was all quiet As it should be :D But now it was 4 am and took us a while to get back to sleep We woke again at 7.30 which still felt too early after the disturbance last night but we got up and finished the packing Given that all we had bought were two magnets, it still mystifies me why the re packing was so difficult Its like the clothes had multiplied by themselves. Andy went to collect the boys who were in various states of readiness which explains why earpods and suncream were left behind I had meantime asked about the hotel airport shuttle - apparently they charge by passenger and by large case so they were asking for $150 – I think not. We didn’t want to faff about with taxis so a quick hop onto the internet and we booked the non stop Flyer van for $100 . Could have got it $25 cheaper if we had gone for the multi pick up option but with 5 of us already on board, we preferred to book on our own. That and we are just downright unsociable ! I was a bit nervous about it being such a last minute booking but we will have to wait and see what turns up at 2.50 this afternoon We were able to leave all our bags for a $2 fee and Andy checked us out , mentioning the fact that we had been woken up by our neighbour two nights in a row. Not that it was the hotel’s fault at all – but they refunded us one night for the inconvenience and hoped it wouldn’t put us off staying with them again Way to go Hilton – much respect for your customer service.:thumbs-up As today will involve more walking we opt for a taxi to our first port of call I know , feeble lightweights 10 minutes later ( around 1030) we are arriving here The Lincoln Memorial http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psp2egns1o.jpg We were not alone http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psrrl8bgq2.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pspndzwiyh.jpg Fab view along the “ Forrest Gump pool” as the boys called it http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psadeozgxi.jpg With Capitol Hill in the distance http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psvh1t7mox.jpg Big Abe http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psijfudkri.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psnxyfp3mr.jpg The Gettysburg Address http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps7bwfy4c3.jpg We set off along the reflecting pool, realising it was actually much cooler if you walked on the path under the trees Ssh, don’t tell anyone we walked over the grass http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pslx1henjs.jpg Much better under here http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psegipzabw.jpg WE had a lovely walk up to the WW2 memorial http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psuyglmdem.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psu5gzlrd2.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psfowiomyd.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pseg62patg.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pssd0cjcbg.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psklplfkcm.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pso0toyg24.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psuk9o7tws.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pswtz1bgwj.jpg Each of these panels depicted different aspects of the war, they were beautifully detailed Just a couple here http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psqmw5npel.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psw70n1mpe.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pspapwi50d.jpg |
Looking back to the Lincoln Memorial
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psoblz5pgl.jpg And ahead to the Monument http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psupua9cad.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pscfbb7he0.jpg Reservoirs dogs trying to recall Tufty’s road safety messages ( use the crossing people ! ) http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psvapf4omo.jpg Some deep historical insight clearly being imparted by me here and falling on deaf ears obviously http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pspesrwxxk.jpg On reflection, it also appears the pressure of packing means the boys did their best “ we got dressed in the dark/this was all we could find/nothing matches “ impression :erm: Time for a bit of a sitdown http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psjrezfoln.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps4bw9yc1y.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psk8i6qmuq.jpg You can see all the flags are at half mast Sadly, the flags were to be at half mast the whole time we were in America due to a spate of fatalities amongst police officers . It was a controversial time with a corresponding series of fatal civil shootings as well. Made you think a lot about gun control – it was hard to avoid on the news Some of the footage is , well, shocking. Unfortunately we hadn’t been able to get tickets to go up the Monument. Nobody really minded but if we go again, I would certainly try to book some. After a brief rest, it was a case of turn left and head to the White House http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psrelklr9n.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps6jaa5bal.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psysthv43u.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psb34jug0h.jpg Democracy in action http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps22dm0n2f.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psiphlqtgb.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pslp1wu6bk.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psgc0oi0l5.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psq6cz9ijg.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psyg03kwhf.jpg The White House Christmas Tree http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psv55zi3ao.jpg It needs Disneyfication ! http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...pswqbgfbun.jpg Its just so lovely in this area, its like the Boardwalk , you just cant have too many pictures, even though they all look the same ! http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...psinfrvr1l.jpg http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps45ne8kn8.jpg And I have to leave it there to go out ! Today was picture overload, it's all so beautiful, a bit like Rome in an odd way, every turn was another amazing building. |
How rude of your neighbour, some people are just so inconsiderate – sounds like the hotel dealt with it well though.
Did the boys enjoy Washington? |
