AP room discount

If I was to purchase AP but it was not activated until I actually go could I book a room and get a discount on it? Or can I only book a room at discounted rate when AP is active

If you booked the Augusts and got the free dining you would not get that at xmas as the dates don't qualify for free dining so that would be an extra cost to think about x
