Have you checked the cost of flight plus car hire? When I looked at flight only the prices were way higher (something like a £1,000 more for the four of us) than flight with car hire.

I don't know, its a bit weird. When looking at flights only the return flight had the option of returning to Gatwick or returning to Heathrow, both direct and both leaving at around the same time.
