How about Boston coupled with a few extra days in Cape Cod.

We did it in a strange way though. Flew to Boston and stayed in the centre for 2 or 3 days then flew to San Francisco for a week then back to Boston and drove to Cape Cod via Plymouth Rock.

Boston very walkable (although we did use the subway over to Harvard for a stroll). Cape Cod very pretty and pretty English in town names.

Lots of history and a shorter flight.
