Your trip sounds amazing. We are going to New York in December and I want to take the overnight train to Chicago. I'm going with my mam and she's not sold on the bedrooms on board. Would love to hear how you find it.

Newport Beach is supposed to be gorgeous as is Laguna Beach. Friends have done Laguna but it's more adult centered- galleries, wine tasting, fancy restaurants. Huntington Beach is supposed to be really family friendly and it's Surf City so I bet your son would enjoy.
