The new logo looks quite different to that old one to me. At least back then they had their own font rather than just using Helvetica Bold.
Funny to think that back in 1989 there were only 3 rides at MGM - Star Tours, Great Movie Ride and the Backlot Tour. And Star Tours didn’t open until December, 7 months after MGM opened.
