Since July, anything sold at the same time is automatically treated as a package under EU rules, so if flights and accommodation are sold at the same time, the travel company must take full responsibility for providing the holiday as booked.
Expedia have been particularly tricky about this, suggesting people buy their flights then add-on their hotels later, the exact opposite of what they've been promoting for years.
In your case, your flights wouldn't be covered as a package, but as long as you're booking with one of the major carriers, I wouldn't worry. There's no suggestion any of the big transatlantic companies have any issues which would lead to them failing.
