We travel with my adult son who has invisible disabilities, so long as we’ve arranged assistance in advance we’ve had no issues booking it at all over the years Which airlines are you referring to ? Personally we’ve never experienced this but would be good to know which ones don’t follow the expected SOP (probably).
Of course there can be a difference between what an airline rep says will happen and what happens on the day too. Allow lots of extra time in case it isn’t as smooth as you hope (not a slam at BA at all , just experience of lots of transatlantic flights with my son and also experience of working at Heathrow ... special assistance can be patchy for a variety of reasons regardless of airline)
