Have a look if you can add a car to your BA booking, in the manage my booking part of their website. We paid around �70 more for full size suv compared to the flight only price on our California trip, sign up for the executive club and you get a 2nd driver free.
Not sure if you can add a car later as we booked it at the same time but worth a look. The car was with Avis and had all insurances and taxes paid, just fuel to pay for.
