Well what can i say about LA specifically. Its a massive area and like any major city has problems. But this should not out you off. The good bits are still good and if you willing to look at some not so obivous places it can be great. I see you are looking at some specific places so you have done your home work and i expect you will like these. Hollywoods blvd is a tourist trap and go too far and you will see the less glamourous side , but for me this is part of the appeal. Hollywood has always been a melting pot and will always be. If you go just 2 block back from the blvd you can find a hiking trail in runyon canyon park, which is great place to walk and if you manage to get to the top you get a great view over LA. Moving to the beaches they have some lovely ones.
One thing we found in greater LA was that places seemed to wind down earlier, so bear this in mind when thinking about evening food.
