just to add to what Caj said I think the 30 meter ethernet cable cost about £15.and we leave it connected permanently into one of the sky box Ethernet ports. That leaves me with only one spare network port which I run to an 8 port switch to give me more ports but that bit isn't relevant to you.

Ref powerline adapters. I believe some of them have issues if you have different mains ring for each floor so if, for example, your son is on the top floor and the router is on the ground floor they may be on seperate mains rings which may cause problems

In your case in not sure how a second router would help as (a) they are not something the average consumer (sorry to be blunt, but true) and (b) the two routers need to talk to each other. So short of running a cable between the 1st router and second router a second router IN MY OPINION wouldnt help.

So to summarise, an ethernet cable would give best results but would need running between the two points

As a test you could buy a long cable an run it loose between the router and his xbox and see if it helps but if it does work you may have an issue getting it back off of him if you don't like it being draped everywhere !
