I am unsure how they were taught something different?

The curriculum was laid out, having checked with my sis who teaches maths, there were no questions on the exam that were not part of the revised curriculum (maybe one that pushed into further maths - but that is not unusual, looking at past papers). The questions may have been challenging and asked in a way that they were not used to, but the content should not have been a surprise.

If so many have done badly the grade boundary will be low, so it will even out in the end. GCSE maths last year a pass was set at 19%! nineteen... because the questions were hard - though still on the curriculum.
