I'll just add that unless you cannot acquire one for whatever reason or one of you would have difficulty around credit then I would recommend getting a credit card. It's just a great bit of security to have when you travel abroad. You can absolutely get around the need for a credit card and it's not a necessity but I feel so much more secure esp in the US when I have a cc.

Hope you don't think I'm overstepping but I was once anti-cc and raised to stay away from them but as long as you are responsible and always pay off in full they are a great way to make your money work for you.
