Solo from Southampton- day 5 Alesund

Last night I had ordered breakfast to be delivered to the cabin, I can’t believe this is free, and it was a really great service.

I’ve ordered it between 8-8.30, so I had set an alarm for 7.45am to make sure I’m awake and ready. Unfortunately I haven’t had a good night sleep, the seas got quite rough from about 4am and everything was rattling around my cabin. Docking was really noisy too so I was wide awake.

Breakfast came on the dot of 8, and I wasn’t hungry but choked down some Rice Krispies, one piece of toast and half a mini croissant. I had requested a few more pastries so I wrap up a blueberry muffin and a mini pain au chocolat to put in my bag for the day. I was planning on getting on the hop on hop off bus when it started at 9, but I’m absolutely exhausted and try to have an hours sleep, but it’s just too noisy.

I get off about 10, and buy a bus ticket, the bus is there but completely full, so we have to wait half an hour in the rain for the next. I had fancied the open air (sunnmore) museum but it’s starting to rain really hard, so I stay on the bus a full loop until the aquarium, which I hope to be mostly indoors. The commentary is good, but we can’t see much due to the heavy rain and the roads are very twisty and turny so I’m feeling a bit queasy.

I get off at the aquarium and wander around which I enjoy. The outside areas are more impressive, with penguins, otters and seals, but it really is raining, so I duck back inside, I’m still feeling a bit travel sick and can’t face pastries so I buy a slice of pizza from the cafe, this is only 39nok, about £3.50, and it was massive, bizarrely a small bowl of soup was £9.

I watch the diver feed the fish in the main tank, then head outside to wait for a bus. I have just missed one, and it’s another 25 minutes or so when another comes.

I head back to the bus stop of the cruise ship. It’s gone 2pm by this time and I am concerned about doing another loop of the bus. It’s 90 minutes if you don’t stop, and I thought trying the open air museum at this point is too risky.

I decide to walk to the Art Deco bit of town, and have a good wander around, it’s very pretty indeed.

I find a bigger supermarket and manage to get DH a couple of small cans of Norwegian beers as I don’t see anything else really in the shops. I might get a few more from Bergen tomorrow if I don’t see anything else.

I continue mooching and take some pics, then I head back to the ship. It’s nearly time for DH to finish work, and so I head to Brodie’s, a picture quiz is just starting so I join in, this was quite good fun but I only get 14/20, I was on my own though.

I phone DH over a cider, then nip to my cabin for a very quick shower and change, then straight up to Planet bar to watch the sail away.

I get a seat easier today as there is also a sailway party outside. We set off really promptly then a fire tug comes out to see us off. And a little later the pilot who has come on to help leaves also.

I start walking down the stairs to head down to the main dining room, and I pass the beach house where they are advertising a new menu. Well I have to say I fancy this much more, so I decide to duck in. It’s just a beautiful night and they have some of the best views on the ship. I wasn’t going to eat here again, but for £7.50 I decide to give them the benefit of the doubt and try again.

I order the potato skins which are tasty, no cheese to them though, just really like a leek mash on the skin with a bit of bacon, but the sauces on the table liven them up a bit.

Then the chicken tenders, again, these are nice but massive.

I decline dessert, I’m very very full and couldn’t finish the main.

This was better than last time, but on the whole doesn’t beat the main dining room. The views are to die for, but I find the 2 massive courses that come quite quickly have me stuffed so quick.

I finish my wine and head down via my cabin to drop off some water and pick up the Horizon magazine. Quick wine from the Glass House then into the theatre to nab a seat near the back in case I’m not keen.

The theatre is absolutely packed, so very busy but I grab a seat next to a very chatty lady.

I read my horizon and we’re in Bergen only from 7.00-2.30 and I do want to make the most of my last port. So I need to try to have an early night tonight.

Well these guys were excellent, so funny and good and I was gutted I missed their first show.

I change my reservation for the Indian because I realise that it’s the formal night tomorrow not tonight. The very kind man remembers me from booking but advises me as I want to watch the footie to book for 6 then leave at 8 and get a seat. Good advice I think. Must remember not much lunch for me.

I nip up to the Planet bar, it’s half as busy tonight so I get a table much easier, it’s a very different view tonight, open sea, cloudy and choppy.

I read my horizon and device to book into the free ladies pamper party at 3, gives me something to do before getting ready for dinner. I phone and book in, then head to my cabin.

Shower, read a bit then sleep
