Howling @ the Horror October 2015 - Day 13 - Last Trip to HHN (4)

Back to Day 12

Just in case you are interested, its Sunday. I haven't kept a record of days or dates as its nice to loose a sense of time.

However, we woke up a little sad, after almost a fortnight of amazing Halloween events we were on our last night of events As we had done most of the rideswe wanted to, we took our time getting up. We decided to try the NBC Sports Cafe which was on the site of our all time favourite place in Citywalk - NASCAR. Now this was just a soft opening but we wanted to see what it was like.

I am glad they had a soft opening - as we could see a lot of the problems which they were "ironing out" such as a team of 5 on the welcome desk and not enough serving staff. We waited about 20 minutes before we were acknowledged at our table and the people on the next table walked.

The food was "OK-ish" and I am glad to hear the service and the food has improved since. We will be giving it another go.

We head straight to Diagon Alley as we haven't had a chance to "do it properly" and I am so glad we did. The level of details is amazing, we could easily spend a day there and not see everything. You could spend a day just trying the different flavours of ice cream!

We then headed over to Springfield for their holding area. Universal clear the park completely and the Springfield area is a good place to watch how effective they are at this.

HHN Tip No 5 - If you are going to more than one night - mix and match your holding area (in 2015 there were three main ones - Diagon Alley which remained fully open, Springfield Bar for a chilled drink or Finnigans for drinks and the party atmostphere We loved all three and you end up first in line for different houses.

All too soon its time for our last evening

As its my last entry on HHN, I want to talk about Jack. The idea of an Icon for HHN was not a new idea, its something they started very early on and their most famous is Jack. As its the 25th Anniversary, they brought him back with pizzazz, he had a show and a house.

We never watched the whole of the show but we did catch most of it in installments, at one point we were grabbing a drink in the famous "Mel's Die In" (Univeral do details very well for HHN) and we were lucky to have a ring side seat for the show.

I can remember the first time we we saw the Mel's Die-In sign on the first evening in our first year. Its then I think I realised just how much effort Universal put into this being the best event in the world of its kind!

Anyway, Jack also had an Anniversary house (probably a 6/5), this onw was special as it was a mixture of some of the best effects from previous houses, including a Jack Fest.

This is "Classic Jack" as he first appeared (as we now know straight from Shadybrook Asylum)

And this is "Ringmaster Jack" as he appeared later on. Older, dirtier and and even more psycotic (he is the one on the right!)

There is also a third Jack which I don't have pictures off but I wanted to show how much detail Universal put into maintaining the back stories of these characters.

It also had some very big and heavy "SIF (Stuff in Face" to work through, not as bad as the whole wardrobe you had to wade through in The Basement in Howl-O-Scream)

It was very different to many houses as you don't have a story to tell through the house - but you didn't know what scare was coming next.

The only house I have got left is American Warewolf in London (again a 5/5). We saw this two years ago, so knew the house from the tour. It is still very well done and one fact we learnt on the tour was that John Landis was not happy with the wolves in the first house so put the deisngers in touch with the artist who made the original wolf. And he leant the team the original molds to re-cast the Wolves

We enjoyed our last evening, and loved HHN again this year. It is now a very busy event and this detracts from some of the scare zones.

On the downside for me, I am not a fan of the growing trend of young (under the age of 7/8) children being made to wear blindfolds and earmuffs before entering the house with parents (mainly because it slows the line up and knocks the scareactors out of their rhythm!) but on the upside at least they have banned prams and pushchairs from the houses and were finally re-enforced it this year. Also we did see a rise in drunken behaviour this year but it was sorted very quickly.

We loved the event and would go again - In fact we are in two years :-)

Days Spends
Lunch at NBC Cafe with Drinks (my only cocktail of the holiday!) - 66. 38
Parking - 25.00
Locker - 10.00

(Our records show that we spent another 85.00 but I can't think on what! Some of it would havbe been on drinks and snacks)

Total Daily Spend - 181.38
Running Total - 2064.07
Average Daily Spend - 154.18

On to Day 14

I don't really think it's appropriate for kids to attend HHN; there should be an age limit. I'm scared by the pictures so I can't imagine how a little kid would feel, blindfolds and earmuffs will disorientate them and they'll be scared regardless.

Yes I agree with you, there are some children who obviously really enjoy it - but chatting to some of the Cast Members, they have lots of problems with scared children

I have been really careful to pick photos because of the number of children on the site - I could go for some which are a lot worse, so this is the edited version! I wanted to give people a flavour.
