Who Knew Toronto was on the Med? Leg Seven - Put In Bay

The Last Leg - Cleveland Rocks

Having had amazing weather all holiday up to now, we woke up to it spitting to rain. We decided however to stick to our plans and go on a tour of the islands on Lake Erie, starting with Put-In-Bay.

We had breakfast in the hotel before packing up the car, it was about an hour to the ferry and it was still threatening to rain. The Ferry cost about $40 for a return and in the hight of summer you have to surrender your car and travel by golf cart (included in the cost of the ferry).

We had planned to do this, but that rain that threaten? Hit us hard about 10 minutes into the crossing.

We decided to drive into the centre, most of the locals were still travelling by golf cart, we also saw a light plane come in almost horizontal as the rain picked up! I think we must have been the only tourists on the island.

Due to the weather when we got to the centre, we found almost everything closed apart from one shop and Hooligan's, the most Irish of Irish bars I have ever been in.

We arrived as they were trying to get a couple of very wet gulls out of the bar area and were most apologetic for not being able to serve us promptly. The Loos (or Wee Wee rooms) were huge with lots of sofas in there and most of the seating in the bar were snugs with a small window in the glass which the staff open to pass us the food and drinks. We were given an irish quiz to do whilst we were eating.

Mr W had some Guinness wings and fries and I had an adult grilled cheese sandwich. Big portions, plenty of sides and it was hot (we were not by this point, we were wet!)

Put in Bay is a very picturesque place and its a shame we didn't see it at its best, the weather was just getting worse and worse so we decided to head back to ferry just in case the weather would stop the ferry.

By the time we got back to the mainland, the rain was really coming down so we decided to stick to the main roads and head into our next stop of Detroit.

About 5 miles from the centre, we ground to a halt (just as the road split for Lorries to go off to Canada)... we waited and waited... and then watched a couple of police cars and ambulances flash passed. Ther had been an accident on the interstate just ahead and I think it took us about an hour to travel about half a mile. I was begininng to be pleased we had left the island early.

We were stopping at the Courtyard in the centre of detroit. Its opposite the GM centre and has the monorail through the middle. The bar and restaurant are not up to much but some of the places opposite at the GM Centre are worth it.

By the time we got there, we were almost aquaplaning as there was so much water on the roads. We used the cover walk way to walk to the GM tower to get some food and to talk about the plan for the next day.

We were supposed to go to see the Detroit Tigers baseball team, but we didn't fancy sitting in the rain for a couple of hours, so we opted to go to the Henry Ford Museum instead...

... a good choice as it turned out, there was almost 12 inches of rain fall in a couple of days (typical for a rustbelt storm in September) and the game was called off...
