Day 2

Woke up and got ready for the day. Wrote up notes while Chris slept until time started going on and woke him up, he got ready and we were good to go. Epcot day!

Hopped in a Lyft to the main Epcot entrance. Our driver was James and he was an Orlando local, telling us all about how he knows the area as he is from there.

Now, I know we were at the Dolphin and could walk or get the boat to Epcot, BUT, my reasons for being lazy and getting a Lyft were threefold.
1. I wanted to enter Epcot through the main entrance by Spaceship Earth
2. Our first FastPass was for Soarin’, which is at the front of the park
3. We had a busy day ahead and I wanted to save our feet the walk.

First stop of the day was Starbucks for GIANT coffee based drinks. Um, YUM.
We watched the Fountain of Nations for a bit before heading up to The Land where we perched on a wall watching the world go by and finishing our drinks.

With perfect timing (possibly the only occasion of the holiday), our FastPass began and we headed in for Soarin. On the way we passed Garden Grill and it smelled so good I mentally added it to the list for next time.
I know now why people FastPass Soarin’, even as we were walking through the queue area due to FastPass, it seemed really dull, and very blue again. We got to the front and were sent to a docking station. Here I asked if we could ride the top and was sent to the next row along by the CM, no problem at all.

We entered the ride and I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t like this. We actually ended up in the middle row, in the middle bank of seats. We had kids infront of us so no dangling feet problems and a good central view of the screen.
When I saw how the seats rose in the air I was kind of glad we weren’t top. I don’t know why but I’d become a bit of a scaredy cat this holiday!

WOW! Soarin’ is AMAZING! I didn’t notice any scents or effects that people have mentioned online, but it was spectacular.
We both really enjoyed it and Chris said it was his favourite so far.

We headed past Imagination and up towards World Showcase. Snacktime!

After not eating properly the night before, we felt fully prepared to tackle all that the Food & Wine Festival had to offer.

First stop, Patagonia, where we bought beef empanadas. These were hot, tasty and a good size too. While eating them we saw a boat pull up at the dock nearby and thought we’d get the boat across the lagoon so hopped onboard. We do like a boat ride.

The boat didn’t go where we thought it did (Mexico) but instead went up to France. Feeling a bit sheepish as it probably would have been quicker to walk, we disembarked and spied our next snack stop.
Brazil! Now this was goooooood. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! We had a portion of the Crispy Pork Belly with Black Beans, Tomato and Onions each and then shared the Pão de Queijo: Brazilian Cheese Bread (this would have been a good spot to use a QS credit if we were on the DDP). Yum yum yum yum. I think this was my favourite of the festival.

Onwards, through Morocco, which is very pretty but there wasn’t anything we fancied there. We did stop at a cart selling festival goodies where we picked up the guide for the festival (it includes stickers!) and also bought the Food & Wine giftcard that goes on a bungee round your wrist. We just figured this would be easier than faffing with cash at each location, and we were right. We topped up with $100, knowing we could top up again if we needed to.
If you aren’t on DDP and can’t charge to your magic bands, I thoroughly recommend getting the giftcard for festival eating. So much easier.

Next up was Japan, which we’d both been looking forward to as we love dumplings and dim sum. We decided to share here, and bought one Wasabi Shumai Steamed Pork Dumplings and one Teriyaki Ginger Pork. The dumplings were really good and the pork was fall-off-the-bone delicious… though a bit difficult to eat/share. We thought about getting seconds of the dumplings but decided to keep moving round the lake.

Just as we were heading through the plaza area of Japan the drummers started, so we stood and watched them for a while. They were really impressive and I was pleased that quite a lot of other people stopped to watch – I hate when performers at Disney are doing their thing and people just ignore them and walk by. When they finished we gave them a round of applause and continued our journey of gluttony.

America! At this point we decided that the sun was over the yard arm and it would be acceptable to have a beer. That and we had reached the Block & Hans craft beer concession. Here they had Hanson’s MmmHops beer, which I really wanted to try – I’m a sucker for a good pun.
I’m not sure whether the Block & Hans CM was in a bit of a grump or was just being a bit dry humoured but it was lost on me and I thought he was a little short with us.

I was trying to take a photo of the Mmmhops beer bottle with the lagoon and Spaceship Earth in the background, and he told me off for picking up the bottle and walking away with it. Seriously. World Showcase was pretty empty. It was midday and I hardly look like I’m the kind of girl to glass people! I explained what I was doing and gave him the bottle back but he still seemed a bit of a misery. Maybe fed up of young people taking his bottles for Instagram shots?

We sat down at a bench and filled in our festival book, putting in the stickers for the stands we’d visited and planning where to hit next. I fancied the Lobster Roll that they were serving at the USA booth, but with Chris not being a fish eater we couldn’t share and it didn’t seem like the best value.

On we trudged to our next destination, Germany! We were looking forward to stopping here as the beers looked so good. First we stopped at the beer cart, I had the Grapefruit beer, which was DELICIOUS. Oh my goodness, perfect for the Florida heat and humidity. Chris had the Weissbier… and we were ID’d! Luckily I had the passport copies that the lovely girls at Alamo had done for us and the chap was happy with that.

Now for food. We ordered 2 servings of the Roast Bratwurst in a Pretzel Roll, which was good – the mustard was really tasty, but not amazing. It was just kind of like a hot dog. Maybe good for people that want something easy and plan to soak up the drinks ;-) It was ok but it wouldn’t be on my list to try again.
We queued for a couple more drinks (for the journey to the next country, obvs) and had a really nice, chatty American girl in the queue with us. She was so friendly and was from the Carolinas where they’d had a bit of hurricane weather but nothing too bad. She was buying the wine flight – I hope she enjoyed it.

Road Beers purchased, we continued.

It is at this point that the heavens opened and it POURED with rain. Total downpour.

We sheltered from the rain in Norway (which, btw, I think may well have the nicest restrooms in Epcot), where a lovely family offered us 2 spare seats at their table. People at Disney can be so nice 
Thankfully the rain didn’t last too long. We bid goodbye to the friendly family and headed towards China.

Bun time! The best part of the China Food & Wine festival was the giant Sriracha they had there. The food was so disappointing. We had both been looking forward to bao here, as we love them when we go for dim sum… but these were, um, disappointing? We ordered one of each of the Beijing Roasted Duck Bao Bun with Hoisin Sauce and Spicy Chicken Bao Bun. The bread was kind of claggy and a bit damp tasting, and there wasn’t much filling either. Our one bad choice of the tour.

We headed into Mexico as we wanted to check if they’d replenished the stock of the 3 Caballeros t-shirts that we had seen the day before. They had and we bought one for Chris.
While I was at the till, chatting with the man and purchasing the shirt, 2 kids came up, interrupted the conversation we were having and said “can we see your pins?”…. uh what?! No excuse me, please, or thank you! The man handed me my shopping and immediately started to pin trade with the children. Fair enough… but at least say to them to wait for you to finish serving the customer! *grumble*

We headed back into Future World as we thought we’d check the standby queue for TestTrack – Chris was desperate to ride. Sadly it was 40 minutes and we had other places to be. We popped into MouseGear for a mooch about in the aircon.

I was looking at the Pandora beads as was thinking of getting one for my mum and auntie, when Chris appeared and offered to buy one for me
I try to get one when we travel places, and chose the park exclusive design of the castle with fireworks…

I also bought some cool Star Wars socks, and the turquoise coloured ‘spirit’ tshirt.

Next stop – Cool Club!

We tried all of the flavours (even Beverly – though I didn’t manage to get a photo). We decided that the melon and pineapple Fanta flavours were by far the best. We also took a photo of the Bibo drink and sent it to our South African friends – who agreed with us that it was disgusting!

It was now time for our next FastPass and we headed to Spaceship Earth. I LOVED this ride wen we came when I was 11… and though it is a little tired now, but “Thank the Phonecians”, it is still great. I wish there was something at the end though, rather than just wheeling you backwards back down from the roof. Anyone else remember the Tomorrow’s Child song that used to be on at the end?
We headed out into the post-ride area… but Judy had lost our results and photo. Bad Judy!

Skipping photos at the bubblegum wall, we had a bit of a chat and decided to sack off our 3rd FastPass of the day at Mission:Space and head back to the hotel. Our feet were tired and there was more magic to come.

This is where hindsight kicks in.

Originally, this day was going to be a rest/chopping day and then head to MNSSHP in the evening. Due to the Irma Remix (grrrr), plans changed and we ended up snacking at Epcot in the morning/early afternoon and then heading back to the hotel, quick shower and change and onto MNSSHP. As you will see, this results in a slightly less enjoyable Halloween plan than planned.

We hop a Lyft back to the Dolphin and get ready for our evening of spooky fun.

Showered and dressed, we head out to get a bus to Magic Kingdom. There is one waiting as we arrive and we jump onboard. There’s a little girl on the bus dressed as Rey from Star Wars and she looks great. None of the other adults on the bus are dressed up.

At this point, Chris nervously checks with me that other adults would be dressed up, and I assure him that they would be.

His worries are relieved when we arrive at Magic Kingdom and we see the whole mix – people in normal clothes, people in Halloween t-shirts, people in facepaint, adults and children in fancy dress.

We tap our bands to the Mickey heads and head in. We are dressed as Indiana Jones & Short Round!

It is already getting dark and Main Street USA looks awesome. Spooky lighting, smoke and all the pumpkins on the lamp posts look fabulous. We stroll up main Street USA taking in the atmosphere and decide to start trick or treating.

We head into Adventureland over the bridge, behind a family where the dad was dressed as a pirate and seemed determined to talk like a pirate for the evening, we find this funny but I’m pretty sure his wife was hoping he would give it up pretty soon.

Jafar walks past us as we head past the Swiss Family Treehouse, but we have decided we aren’t doing meet and greets unless there is zero queue. He seems to be being escorted either from/to a meet and greet and we continue on our way.

We spy Moana! She is meeting by Jungle Cruise and her queue is LONG! I feel a bit awkward about meeting ‘face’ characters, but if the queue wasn’t huge, Moana would be one I would like to meet.

First candy stop is Jungle Cruise, where I get a bag and a handful of sweets. We started out by deciding to share a bag as less to carry… but then realise that by sharing a bag we only get 1 handful of sweets… while there are 2 of us (and we bought 2 tickets). By the 3rd stop, Chris picks up a bag of his own!

Next treat stop is the Enchanted Tiki Room and then Pirates of the Caribbean. The CM handing out the sweets is impressed with our costumes, we get a big compliment and a generous amount of treats!
We decide to ride Pirates as we are there, no queue and I thought it might have a Halloween overlay. It doesn’t, but does seem darker – maybe because we are riding at night?

We stop for a PhotoPass with the Hitchhiking Ghosts on the way into Frontierland, before picking up more candy at Splash Mountain.

Big Thunder Mountain time! WOW, is this ride awesome in the dark. It seems faster and we both really enjoy it. We think about riding again, but there is candy to gather and we have a date with some fireworks looming, so head onwards to the trick or treat stop by the boat dock. Here the CM compliments our costumes again and we are really glad that we made the effort.

People are getting in position for the 1st parade, but I had read online that it was better to wait for the 2nd parade as it is less busy, so we carry on our trick or treating mission (hindsight = big mistake).

There’s a trick or treat station by the boat dock for the paddlesteamer, we head down the ramp to collect the candy, then head back up. As we are heading back up we see a chap going straight back round to go again! We now feel like we’ve been missing a trick – but think maybe people would remember us if we go round twice as we are dressed up.

Onto the Haunted Mansion – well it is Halloween! Madame Leota is entertaining in the front garden and she is hilarious.
The queue moves quickly and soon we are crammed into the stretching room again. We shuffle out and into our doom buggy. There is a family next to us and the little girl is requesting to ride with her dad, the mum seems a little put out by this.
Dad – “It doesn’t matter, it’s not a big deal”
Mum –“that’s because she’s been choosing you all day!”
Oh dear – maybe she figured her dad was a better defence against the ghosts?

Soon we board our Doom Buggy and are on our way. Now, this is another one where I thought there was a Halloween overlay, but there isn’t… maybe it was just the extra stuff in the garden?
Anyway, the ride stops and we are held where the candelabra is dancing mid-air in the corridor. This is delightful. Perfect place to stop and there is a strong, cold draught.

We’re stopped for what feels like a long time but is maybe only 5-10 minutes. We’re enjoying the breeze so don’t really mind. The ride starts again and the rest of our journey is uneventful, though I do really wish for photos at the end with the hitchhiking ghosts.

We exit the manor and head into Fantasyland. Time is ticking on and we want a good spot for the fireworks… but I’m hoping we can squeeze in a few more treats and rides.

We get into Fantasyland and it looks like there is no queue for Peter Pan’s Flight. SCORE! I couldn’t FP this (Chris would wonder why I had FP’d a kiddie ride), but I knew he would love the flight over London.
We head through the gate and through the barriers… but then… the queue goes INDOORS! It has a sneaky indoor queue! The queue is moving, but it is winding through the Darling’s house and the nursery. It’s a nice queue area with lots to look at but I’m starting to worry that we are wasting time. We decide that if we aren’t riding in 15 minutes we will give it up.
Thankfully, the queue is constantly moving and we are in our pirate ship before the 15 minute limit comes around.

When the boat launches off the platform, Chris is amazed and can’t figure out how it works until he looks up and sees the track above us.

Flying over London is amazing and I am glad we waited, and it was a relatively short line for this particular ride.

We hop off and head into Pinocchio’s Village Haus where there is another trick or treat stop, then Mickey’s Philharmagic for more candy.

Candy haul!

I thought we could head down the right side of the castle and back to the hub, but it is closed. A kind cast member directs us round the other side of the castle and out through Tomorrowland.

On our way we see 7DMT with barely any queue. I’m tempted as I was unable to FastPass this, but time is against us and fireworks take priority!

There’s another treat station in the Sonny Eclipse restaurant but we are now needing to find a spot to see HalloWishes. We scout around the hub but spaces are getting filled up. I know the trees in the hub look nice and provide lovely ambience during the day… but my goodness they’re a pain when trying to find a fireworks spot with a view of the castle for the projections!

After wandering round and getting moved on once we find a spot on the left of the Hub. It’s not ideal but we agree we wouldn’t have wanted to sit and wait for an hour when there was so much else going on.

Soon, the warning about the lights turning down is made and the fireworks begin.

These were awesome. Absolutely spectacular… even from our less than ideal viewpoint we were able to appreciate the projections and the huge explosions. I’d love to see this from California Grill or somewhere with the music piped in but a bit of a distance away to get the full effect.

The fireworks finish and now we are both flagging. A lot. People start to leave and we go against the tide up to Liberty Square. I have the idea to watch the Hocus Pocus show in front the castle that will be starting soon, or find a spot near the beginning of the parade so we can watch it and leave.

We spy some benches on the bridge between Liberty Square and the Hub and go to sit there. Chris heads round the side and it waiting for me, when a lady dressed as Snow White steps infront of me. “Excuse me” I say, gesturing towards the benches, “I have 13 people to seat” she snaps back at me “if there’s room after that then maybe”…. Ummmm, rude. Really rude. Quite nasty too. This is the first rude nastiness we have encountered. I’m tired, my feet hurt and this really upsets me.

I reach Chris by walking around the front, but a nice CM appears and mentions to us that they’ll be clearing the area in a minute anyway as it is a preferred viewing area. HAH, Snow B*tch.

We walk away and perch up on the low wall around a flowerbed. We can’t see the castle but can hear the Hocus Pocus show, enjoy the music and entertain ourselves guessing the villains/films. From where we are they are roping off the end of the walkway. We are sat on the end so could just stand up when the parade comes along and have a good view. I pop to a cart and get a couple of drinks that we can have while sitting on our wall and listening to the show.

Chris tells me he is tired and wants to leave. My feet are killing me (I’m in Converse, which just don’t seem to work for pounding the parks, even though I wear them all the time at home). We decide to wait to see the horseman and then go.

Hocus Pocus finishes, and we wait. A large group perch up next to us and start invading our space. We’re weary, getting tired of being surrounded by people and i'm thinking a bit jet lagged.

Eventually the horseman gallops past, and as much as we would like to see the parade (see, we should have watched the earlier parade, finished off the last couple of treat stations after the fireworks and maybe hit 7DMT), we are tired of being jostled, I’m still upset by the Snow White encounter and we decide to make a move.

It's so hard to take a photo of this guy!

There’s still no sign of the parade so we surrender our spot to the space invaders and head down Main Street through the shops. As we reach City Hall, we see Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps from Zootopia/Zootropolis doing the electric slide with a load of kids in the road to entertain them while waiting for the parade.

We stop for a couple of PhotoPass pics on Main Street, and a few more at the entrance. This kind of makes me glad we left early as I reckon there would be a huge queue for these later, but we don’t have to wait at all. Silver linings and all that.

We head to the bus stop and there’s a bus for the Dolphin ready and waiting. We hop on board and head back to the hotel. I think we both fall asleep almost immediately!

Steps = 20,893 (8.15 miles)

I got the email saying you had done an update last night, I was quite excited to read it, but I resisted the urge to look as I knew I would want to give it a proper read and not rush through!

I love the photo of you both at the beginning, where was it taken?

Ok, are you joking? No walking around the Boardwalk? You used a lyft? Tut, Tut! I'm sorry, but take your excuses elsewhere! Although I do get it that spaceship earth looks more impressive from the front hmm...I'll have to mull that one over!

The old Soarin was our very first ride ever at wdw! It was absolutely not what any of us were expecting at all...we had no clue back then and it was a massive eye opener about how awesome the attractions would be. I'm glad you both enjoyed the new version.

Hang on, you walked past imagination? Please tell me you went back to go see Figment?

The food and wine snacks sound delicious. I would have wanted to have the mmm bop beer too! What a great song!

I've read that before about the norway toilets...I don't think we've ever been so I'll have to make sure we take a little stop there. How bizarre that I am now mentally adding toilets to my 'must do' list.

The Pandora charm is sooooo cute.

It sounds like you would have done better with a longer rest in the afternoon, a shame you didn't enjoy the party as much as you hoped...that can be something you do better next time .

I agree btmr is better at night, actually all rides seem better when it's dark (faster, bigger drops...).

I'm glad you both decided to pick up a candy bag in the end, we've never done MNSSHP but I think that the trick or treat candy collection must be part of the fun and what makes it different from a normal night in MK.

I'm not surprised you were wiped out what with the stress of will we be able to go on holiday combined with the jet lag and constantly being on the go, it's no wonder really that you couldn't last for the 2nd parade. I hope you weren't too disappointed.

Another fab read though, thank you for sharing it.

Aww, sorry to hear about that horrific Snow White encounter! What a cow! And it's a shame you didn't get to see the parade but that photo at the entrance is awesome! We only managed to get the hitch-hiking ghosts magic shot as the queues were too big for all the others!

Awww, thank you! That is so kind of you to say!
The photo at the top was taken on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. We went in 2016 for a wedding. It's a wonderful city and i'd love to go back.

Mull away... it was Chris' first trip so I wanted him to do the impressive entrance with Spaceship Earth in front of you, entering the 'proper' way if you will. I stand by our laziness, hahaha.

We loved Soarin', what a great ride to do as your first! We did Buzz Lightyear (as you now know), but considering Chris is currently playing Call of Duty, a shooting ride was probably a good first choice. I wish I had been able to ride the original Soarin', smelling the orange groves and having the sea mist sounds amazing.

I love Figment too, I wish we'd detoured and done his ride that morning as I think it is another Epcot classic, even if it is no longer in it's original form.

Food & Wine was great, I loved being able to try so much because all the food was taster size - and therefore being a glutton seemed excusable

If you've got the urge and are in the area, the Norway toilets are very good - though still have the odd American saloon doors with huge gaps at the top and bottom!

We really should have had a longer rest, but we thought we would be ok as we are both night owls and regularly stay up until midnight at home. Sadly didn't factor walking miles, humidity and jetlag into the equation. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and for the next trip I will veto any activity on Party day.

You are so right about the darkness making a difference. I think i'm going to have to start a list of rides I want to do in the dark.

Trick or Treating was a lot of fun, and definitely a plus for going earlier in the year and doing Halloween rather than slightly later and doing Christmas. You can take candy home but not sure how well the MVMCP treats would last as they're fresh.

I was a bit disappointed we missed the parade, and was kicking myself for not making sure we saw the first one. However, we saw the fireworks which is what I really wanted and did decent candy collecting, plus Peter Pan which I doubt we would have done anyway.
Without the Dibb I wouldn't have even known about the parties... so I think we still came out ahead

Thank you for joining us and for your lovely comments! I'm going to give yours a good read as soon as I have finished my own as I love your attention to detail

She was a real cow. I was so pleased that she got moved along by CMs anyway. She was most un-princess like!

Yeah, I was miffed that we missed the show but we waited a while after the horseman and no joy. I did suggest we walk into Frontierland to the start to watch, but we were both kind of wiped by that point and the thought of walking further from the exit to have to walk back later did not appeal!

We were lucky, I think we were the second people to do the ghosts shot and the ones at the front weren't busy as everyone was still waiting for the parade - I'm consoling myself with the good pics without people in the background to make up for leaving early. A fair trade maybe as it is so hard to get photos without other people in it.

Thank you for reading and commenting! Makes me feel less like i'm talking to myself I'm hoping to read yours when I have finished writing this as I think we were there almost at the same time.

I know
I had read that it was so good online too, and the photos I'd seen of the costumes just looked fantastic.

Something else to go back for I suppose

Thank you so much for reading along and commenting! I will have to give your reports a look when I have finished as I'l love to read about the parade.

Thank you so much for reading along and commenting! I will have to give your reports a look when I have finished as I'l love to read about the parade.
A definite reason to go back

I’m not sure I’ve fixed my reports yet which feature Halloween - photobucket ruined them by changing their rules

I know, and the more reasons we have to go back, the stronger my case for a return trip will be

Oh, what a nuisance for you. I'm finding the photos the most tedious part of doing the reports as I have to resize them all. To have done it all once and then have to do it again must be very frustrating - good luck!
