Tiles or upstands?

Hi, I posted on a quartz thread but decided to start my own so as to not hijack.

I'm kitchen planning at the moment and had originally thought I would get white metro tiles but now I'm not sure whether to get upstands instead!

What do you have and what are the pros and cons for your decision?

I have a range cooker set into a chimney breast and was planning on getting a glass splashback for that, something like the below. Our walls are likely to be painted white or a slight off white/grey.

I chose upstands in our old kitchen mainly because I had had enough of decision making and decided I could repaint cheaply and easily if i made a mistake but tiles were not only expensive but meant to be there longterm. The new kitchen I again chose upstands because of the decision making but also I have got quartz windowsills and it fits in very nicely under them. This time I also didn't need a splashback as the hob is on the island.

Hope that helps x

I have got granite upstands then a glass splashback that is back painted in F&B that sits on top of the upstand and runs the full length of the kitchen. I love it because it is so easy to just spray and polish and i don't have to worry about marking any paint that would be above the upstand.

I did look at glass but seemed very expensive. We have 3 sections and thought it may look too much. Saw mirrored ones somewhere and dh loved it, not sure I want that either! Lol.. I may get a quote on the upstands added to our worktop one.

We have upstands with a glass splashback behind the cooker. I like the clean lines and the flexibility to change the wall colour if we want to

Our units run the full length of one wall. The glass is expensive though, we have about 26 feet in length along the wall so the clean lines look great. I would imagine mirrored would be an absolute nightmare to keep clean.

Whatever you do don’t get a stainless steel one! Awful to clean
We didn’t chose it, it came as standard in our new build
