BA seat questions

Hi all,

We usually fly with Virgin but flights are cheaper with BA this year.

Do BA charge for seat selection? If so, does anyone know the rough fees?

Thanks

The cost is different depending on where you sit. This is for my London to Los Angeles flight later this year:

Alternatively you can book for free 24hrs prior to departure.

Yes you can do twilight check in at LGW with BA. We've done it a few times as recently as Nov 2019 when it was all self-service.

Very easy though. Scan passport and select how many checked cases. Place them on scale as usual and it prints the luggage label which you attach to the case and send it on its way. Then it prints luggage tag receipt and boarding cards. Maybe not exactly in that order but near enough. It worked though as we next saw our cases on the MCO carousel next day.

Yes sadly you do pay for seat selection. Can't remember exactly but around £42 per person per flight in WT+

If I am flying economy with BA I don’t usually pay to select seats - in my experience they try to keep parties together. I’d keep checking the seat map to see if it’s filling up and if not, I’d wait until check in. I don’t have any particular preference re seating though.

In other cabins I do sometimes pay if the flight looks busy, as there are less seats in other cabins and more likelihood of getting separated - that’s happened to us once in Club World. In that case, though, the lounge agent proactively got other solo travellers to switch so we were together (we hadn’t asked for this and would have been fine apart).

Thanks guys!

Think I'll go for it and just look at the seat situation nearer the time!

And even in the school hols I've yet to see a plane over 70% allocated in economy(normally around 40% in hols) before the family seat allocation at 5 days. Rest at 3 days and as said BA try to keep parties together and are very good at doing it too

I know people are fearful and want assurance and so I understand the paying, but it's probably not necessary for anyone.

We don't book our seats on BA, and have been sat together every time.

Is it 24 hours before that you can select seats? I'm sure I read somewhere that they select them earlier for families with children? Its my first time flying with them so I'm not familiar with the process.

If you have children under 12 they pre-assign seats around 5-7 days before each flight. You can change them 24 hours before the flight for free, or before 24 hours for a fee.
