hello!

having been many times, staying in villas for years and then more recently on site - both have their pluses.

Personally if you go down the villa route, I would not want to be without a car. Depending on which month you go, walking around in the summer humidity is not much fun and most villas don't have a huge amount you can walk to in the way of restaurants, shops etc.

I have never seen anyone pulled over, and although I know there will always be the odd case where things have gone horribly wrong, I feel sure you would not experience the sort of thing you are worried about.

So my advice would be on site without a car, or off site with a car - or a week of both!

I have lived here for 3 years and have driven about 50,000 miles in that time. I have never been pulled over. Police are often parked at the nearest 4 way stop intersection. They are looking for people who don't come to a complete stop at the stop signs and large trucks that aren't supposed to be on one of the roads. They aren't randomly stopping and harassing tourists. Police also are often watching for speeders as they don't use fixed speed cameras here. If you are stopped you need to keep your hands on the wheel and not get out of the car unless told to do so. They will expect you to have your drivers licence on you at all times. I really wouldn't let fear stop you from hiring a car.

I have likewise driven 50k plus miles in the US and have been pulled once.

I slavishly followed my out of date Satnav and went the wrong way up a one way street (it had been changed a year previously). I was stopped and given suitable advice. (No ticket).
