Toast with a Side of Sausages

I'm not the most tech savvy person and I accidently started two posts when I started our Food Report. Everything will be recorded here but if you're interested in the "back story" and who we are, I've included the link here.. We get better, I promise..!

https://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/sho...3#post13955203

Day 1 - Travel Day

Early start this morning. We left our house at 4.30am for a 7.00am flight from Dublin to London Gatwick. It was so early we couldn't face any food and decided we'd wait until we got to Gatwick to have some breakfast. While we were waiting to board in Dublin, the boys had a Coco Pops bar each (courtesy of Nanny - we're on holiday after all.. )

Our flight took off on time and landed in Gatwick at about 8.15am. Once through to the main terminal, we decided to head to Wetherspoon (Red Lion), in the North Terminal. The restaurant was pretty busy, but we were seated straight away. We ordered, a Large Breakfast (2 sausages, 2 eggs, 2 bacon, hash browns, mushrooms, beans & toast), American Style Pancakes with bacon, Toast & Marmalade and a Breakfast Sandwich (sausage, egg & bacon). We had 2 teas, a water and a cranberry juice and the cost was £36.25. DS2 had the sausages from the Large Breakfast with the side of toast (this is a recurring theme..! )

We really enjoyed our breakfast. It was all very tasty except for the beans – these had a real cheap and metallic taste and the cranberry juice was very watery. Overall, a good value "airport breakfast".

On a side note, we downloaded and used the Wetherspoons app to order food direct to our table – really handy and fast. Paid by PayPal.

After breakfast, we decided to have a bit of a wander around the shops. Our flight wasn't until 1.00pm, so we had nearly five hours to kill.. Shortly after 12.00pm, we discovered our flight was delayed. Thankfully, as part of our travel insurance, we have a Delay / Lounge Access clause, where access is provided to an airport lounge, if the flight is delayed by an hour or more. We were never so grateful to leave the madness of the main terminal..! Access was to the Club Aspire Lounge. The peace and calm in the lounge was bliss. We did note that there was a poor selection of food though - a rice dish, a pasta dish and a cake. (No photo's sorry..! ). We felt that the quality and selection of food didn't match the peaceful environment. We didn't eat, but we had 2 lemonades, a beer, a G&T and a tea. Even though everything was complimentary and we were delighted to be there, I don't think I'd be too happy, if I'd paid out of pocket for access. The kids were just delighted to be able to charge their devices..!

Our flight boarded at about 3.00pm and eventually took off at 4.30pm (3.5 hours delay). We didn't get the usual pretzels and drink but dinner was served pretty soon after we took off. Here's the menu: -

We all had, Japanese Cucumber Salad, then Chili Con Carne with rice and sweetcorn, and a GU pot (chocolate & caramel). I liked this as did DS1, but DH and DS2 didn't. DH was really disappointed with the GU pot, as the desert is usually the only thing he eats on the plane..! In fact, he eats everyone's desert on the plane..

After a while, we got a Fab ice lolly. It did exactly as it said on the tin - it was fab!

About two hours before landing, we had Mile High Tea. We had a roll with mozzarella, pesto, tomato and rocket and then a scone with cream and jam. The roll was awful, but the scone was ok. The cup of tea was lovely

We made up loads of time - the pilot must have really put the foot down. Despite a 3.5 hour delay, we arrived 2 hours after our scheduled arrival time.

Once we cleared immigration and customs, we picked up the car (Budget, never again, but that's another story) and headed to the villa, stopping off in Target to pick up the essentials. 20 minutes later - $88.91 poorer. Arrived at the villa at 10.30pm - exhausted. It was a long day.

Total travel time - 23 hours
Total food spends today - £36.25 and $88.91

Breakfast looks good, I do like Wetherspoons. Great tip about the app too, very convenient.

What a long wait you had between flights, I’d have been going crazy and then a delay on top of that. I think there’d have certainly been some frayed tempers for us.

I can’t believe you still made it to Target for some bits and bobs, you must have been utterly shattered.

I love a Wetherspoons breakfast not that we ever do it that often at the airport. Good idea about using the app, I hate waiting for the bill! Shame about the delay but your there now. Hope you all have a good sleep. Look forward to reading more.

Yes, who is your insurance with , pls?

The longest layover we have ever had was 6 hours at JFK. It went over... Probably wouldn’t do it voluntarily again.

Love a cooked airport breakfast.

Have a wonderful trip.

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments - still not 100% certain we're doing this properly Our travel insurance is with our Irish health insurance provider (VHI) and the two policies are linked. Its the first time we've ever used the lounge access but it was a Godsend!

Day 2 – Seaworld

Early start this morning, even though we had been so late to bed last night. I was up at 4.30am, DH was up at 5.30am and the boys wandered down shortly afterwards. We were absolutely starving as we hadn't eaten anything substantial since Wetherspoons. I don't think anyone can say plane food is substantial..!

Myself and DH had a couple of bagels and coffee. I had an "everyday" bagel (onion and garlic with cream cheese) and DH had a blueberry bagel with butter. Why do bagels taste so much better on holiday? The boys had some cereal we brought from home (Kelloggs variety pack).

After a good look around the villa and a bit of a splash in the pool, we decided to head to IHOP for our second breakfast – our holiday had truly begun..! We arrived at about 8.00am and were seated straight away. Myself and DH had coffee and the boys had apple juice. I ordered a 2 x 2 x 2 (2 eggs, 2 bacon, hash browns and 2 slices of toast) and a side of fruit (grapes, pineapple & melon). DH ordered the Breakfast Sampler (2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage links, 2 slices of ham, hash browns and 2 buttermilk pancakes). DS1 had a tall stack of buttermilk pancakes and sampled all the syrups on offer – Old Fashioned, Blueberry, Butter Pecan and Strawberry (Old Fashioned was his favourite..!) DS2 had, you guessed it, toast with a side of sausages – the first of many! He got four sausages but by the time we got the photograph taken he had eaten one and a half – apologies..!

(Scene of the crime- first of many..! )

Breakfast was hot, fresh and tasty, as always. Restaurant was clean and our server, Amber, was friendly and efficient. Cost was $49.78 excluding tip.

After breakfast we headed to Seaworld for rope drop. We were still full from breakfast and didn't intend staying in Seaworld for the full day, so we just had a few snacks. We had some popcorn (photo courtesy of Google - $5.86) and two ice-cream cookie sandwiches ($10.63).

We left Seaworld at about 2.00pm as it was so hot and headed back to the villa for an afternoon in the pool, On the way we stopped off in Target and picked up some rolls, Jack Daniels Pulled Pork, Jack Daniels Pulled Chicken and some Pepperjack cheese. We also got some Doritos and cheesy dip for later. No photos again, sorry.. I'd love to say we get better, but we don't..! Cost $36.33.

After a lovely afternoon by the pool, our choice for dinner this evening was take out from Cici's Pizza. We ordered a large pepperoni pizza and a cheesy garlic bread - $13.95. Not gourmet food, but hot, fresh, great value and even better, you could eat your dinner in your swimming costume..!

After dinner, the kids settled down with their devices and we sat at the pool with a couple of drinks, Doritos and jalapeno cheese dip.. The fake cheese in a can is one of those things we think we love and look forward to getting, but when we get it, it's never as nice as we remembered..! Won't stop us getting it again next time though.

Total food spends today - $116.55 excluding tips
Overall food spends - £36.26 & $205.46 (excluding tips)

Great second breakfast! I'm so looking forward to an IHOP or Denny's breakfast. The cheese in a can isn't something we've tried, I guess it's no different to the little plastic pots of it they have for pretzels, which we love.

Great day. We love Cicis Pizza too. We've never tried takeaway only eat in. Takeaway looks good value. I am looking for a few takeaway options to eat by the pool.
Do you collect from cicis or do they deliver?
