I've had a look at all your recommendations - I'm thinking Galway might be a good base. We'll be taking out car on the ferry so we can get out and about.

I'm thinking 6 nights in a cottage in Galway area and then 2 nights in Dublin.

Any recommendations for accommodation in Galway and Dublin?

Which ferry port are you going to use? Dublin would be the most convenient for travel to Galway. There is a motorway direct from Dublin to Galway, and once you are out of the city, would take about 3 hours drive.

You could also use Rosslare port but the drive to Galway would be longer and less direct, and you would not have a motor way the whole way like you would Dublin to Galway.

There many companies specializing in holiday cottages in the Galway region. My advise would be to pick the area and then look for holiday cottages in that area. Research the area and see what there is to offer and how far it is from Galway city. I would look for a holiday cottage within walking distance to a town or village. That way you can walk to the local pub or restaurants in the evening time.

For Dublin, if you tell me what you would be interested in seeing or doing, I can recommend an area and various hotels. Depending on what you are interested in, you might find you can walk to things from your hotel. Driving and parking in Dublin city centre is a nightmare and you might be better off leaving the car at the hotel and walking and using public transport.
