If you do get picked to go on standby do they offer you any type of compensation?

If you are denied boarding due to an oversold flight operated by an EU carrier or any flight departing from an EU airport, the provisions of EU regulation EC261/2004 will apply. This may include compensation and/or duty of care (accommodation, meals), depending how long a delay reaching final destination was suffered as a result of being denied boarding.

If you are on a non-EU carrier departing from an airport outside the EU, the regulation does not apply. In the absence of any similar law in that country (no such protection exists in the US), you are at the mercy of whatever you can get from the airline, plus insurance where applicable.

Oooh Question please!
A few times lately one or other of us has been refused for Olci due to added security checks. As there are only two of us flying we haven't then bothered. If one of us checks in does that mean less chance of both of us being bounced?

Yes - sort of. I think it could mean ONE of you could be bounced (not both).

A couple (married but different surnames but same booking) friends flew over to see me last month - one of them got bumped down from First to Coach (American Airlines) - I was astounded they didn’t ask for volunteers and they split up a couple (same sex so maybe they didn’t realise they were a married couple?) so I think in “logic” one partner could be denied boarding ?

Fingers and toes crossed it never happens to you.

That's really unfair!

I'd rather we were both bounced than just one so it's a conundrum.

I agree . They got bunged enough miles for a free 1st class flight but they were major p-Ed off and rightly so (I would have created a stink at the gate but they are not as assertive as I can be lol) - they give his seat to diplomat (apparently) who are guaranteed such a seat at no notice but I am sure there are other single pax that they could have bumped
