Mobile Office chair ruining dining room carpet.

DH has been WFH since April.

I've hardly been in the dining room since then but this morning I noticed that the carpet is wrinkled under the desk where the 5 wheels run over it And there's a hole ...

I initially put a rug under the desk but he took it out as the chair runners were dragging.

I know you can get plastic carpet protectors - although it's a bit late now. Are they any good ? Any recommendations?

I have a carpet protector in my office installed for several years, and it works well.

I have a plastic protector - big enough for moving the chair over. It is good but you need to move it at leave once a week, vacuum around the edge and also I remove for the weekend as otherwise I believe I will have a change of colour where the plastic is. But no marks on the carpet at all.

Thanks - are these the protectors with the spikes on the underside to stop it moving around.

Our local office surplus has them listed but the spikes look a bit vicious ? Wouldn't they put lots of tiny holes in the carpet ?

Mine has small bumps on the underside- got it from Amazon. When you lift it you see the marks - vacuum and they are gone. Used for over a year now and no damage.

we do use it on laminate not carpet though, but it's not got the spiky bits so should be ok?

We used some old laminate flooring we had. Wheels run easily too and carpet seems fine

Protective covering is the only option, usual domestic carpet (even hardwearing) isn't designed for that continual pressure/movement in the same place for sustained periods and so will wear quickly.

You are not the only person to have noticed this during this work form home "fest" of 2020/21 (relative owns a carpet shop, they are selling a lot of hardwood floorign to replace "home study" carpets this summer)
