You can Amtrak from DC to Williamsburg. I think there are two a day. I did Amtrak from NY to DC a few years ago and it was brilliant. So easy to get in to the center of the cities and let someone else stress about driving.
The beltway in DC is quite a freeway btw so I would recommend public transport as you are likely to hit that. |

i looked at this too. if i do hire a car then i would only get it when leaving Washington, perhaps from the airport to avoid the centre traffic.
Some many decisions to make and my star sign is Libra so makes it harder

I did this some years back - picked up rental car from Reagan Airport and drove down to Willismsburg. About 3
hours drive if I recall correctly, it was an easy drive though I did of course have SatNav. I returned car to Dulles on way home for no extra cost.

I would try and get it from Reagan airport and not Dulles and Dulles is the opposite direction to Williamsburg so will add to your drive, not by a huge amount I will say but less is always better! You will be mainly on i95 which I have found ok to drive. Once you are out of the city it’s much easier. If you fancied a stop off and some shopping there are outlets that you will pass on the way at Woodbridge. simon/mall/potomac-mills They have a Cheesecake Factory there for some food if that floats your boat. |

So everything is go for my trip.
Moved the flight to the end of May at no extra cost. I have booked 2 nights in DC so I doubt I will get everything done but I can always return. Looking at getting the Amtrak down to Richmond and then hiring a car from there. Partly as thought the train would be nice and partly as the roads may be quieter so I can build up my confidence. I have 6 nights at the Historic Powhatan resort in Williamsburg and plan to explore from there. The resort has a pool (and gym! ) so hopefully I can relax in the sun a little. I bought a 3 day ticket for Busch Gardens for £65 - rude not to get a bargain. Looking at a day at Kings Dominion and fancy a drive along to explore Jamestown.
