I wouldn't worry too much now if you are not going to have a family for 3 - 5 years. Names seem to come and go with popularity.
Working in a school I have seen all sorts of names and spelling variations and feel sorry for the children growing up with some names |

I always felt sorry for a girl in a class I taught who had the name Isla - but her surname was Mann! Worse than Victoria Plumb and Teresa Green.

I agree with you here. It’s fine giving a pet a funny name or a name that reflects your personality/musical taste/fave tv show etc, but people need to remember that someone has to go through life with it. I definitely think some parents think they’re funny (like the Isla Mann name above, that can’t be an accident) and we get names at school like Leigh Lee where they must think they’re being funny/clever. I think if you’d feel offended if someone made fun of the child’s name, then you have to wonder what it would be like living with that name every day in school where kids can be cruel.

Whatever you decide now won’t be the name you use in 3-5 years and your partner will also want a say.

My twins are called Reggie and Ronnie and trust me people absolutely hated it when we told them what they were called! Not bothered! 🤗

I think I disagree on the only important thing being that you like it.
Frankly, the only person who needs to live with it and therefore like it or be indifferent towards it is the child. They may not be grateful for anything they might be ridiculed for. I do feel quite strongly that a name is something to be carefully considered. IMO it shouldn’t be an opportunity to show the world how quirky you think you are ( this is a general statement and not aimed at the OP) Kids are cruel and like it or not, people are judgemental. In my experience, children don’t want to be different. They just want to fit in Edited at 02:34 PM. |

I never told anyone what names I’d chosen until after they were born. My child my choice and generally people are less likely to give you negative feed back once it’s official- at least to your face anyway
What I would say is you do need to consider the fact your child is the one who has to live with the name so what sounds cute/quirky/unquie to you might not be something they thank you for they grow up. Things to consider Would you be happy yelling the name at the top of your voice in public? Does it go with your surname? And without creating any daft/embarrassing phrases/sayings What do the initials including middle names spell? What can it be shortened/ lengthened to to create nicknames? Will people be able to see it and know how to say it? I’m not a massive fan of dgd’s name it’s sounds more like a dogs name but its what her parents chose as is their right Like said you’ll probably find other names you like before you actually need a name and your partner will def want a say so you will need to be flexible and not be set on just one name. A good compromise esp for more unusual names is to have them as a middle name or as the 2nd part of a double barrelled first name. |
