As long as you have the barcode, you don't need to hit the Alamo desk. AS others have said. jsut drive to the exit, give the barcode, your licence and credit card to the attendant and you are sorted.

I think we (or should I say the ladies in the party, ie. not me!) spent more time picking what car we wanted from the row, than the rest of the process took!

I have completed the save time paper work and barcode. My question is that I've also ordered a gps and 2 child seats. Can I still just go to the garage or do I have to go else where to collect my extras?

You pick them up from the little hut inside the garage do not go to the desk for them.the Satnav are sometimes at the barrier on the way out.
