Best card (Amex?) for airmiles

Due to the Virgin Point change and also our holiday plans over the next 5 years what is the best credit card to collect airmiles?

Also any intro offers on these?

We continue to fly VS to the USA but one of my main thoughts is travelling to the Far East in about 4-5 years time and ideally getting business / first seats for this journey.

Which airmiles will hopefully help with.

Thanks in advance

Either BA Amex premium or Barclays Avios plus. I think the Barclays card has 25k bonus points at the moment.

You get a companion voucher with the Amex card, or an ‘upgrade’ voucher with Barclays (subject to meeting spending thresholds each year). The Amex companion voucher is more useful.

I recommend having a look at head for points guide on which CCs to use for Avios.

I’d advise getting the Amex gold first. It’s free in the first year. I cancel before the year is up and take it out again at some point as I play the referral game and the lounge passes are useful. The Amex gold gives Amex points which can be transferred into multiple airlines (including Virgin/BA), hotels and other bits. Lots of flexibility.

Taking the gold out first means you can also then take out the BA premium card and still qualify for that sign up bonus too without worrying about the 24 month rule. Doing it the other way doesn’t work.

My advice is to sign up your other half in the same order too, to maximise sign up bonuses. You can refer her too to get the referral bonuses.

Always get the gold first before the BA Amex. It’s free for the first year and you can get both sign up bonuses.

Mike, like you I decided to start collecting Avios. A couple of weeks ago I got the Amex BA. premium plus card. This was in addition to my other Amex and the process was really quick and I had the card within a couple of days.

I had to buy a new cooker and I also received a bill for the balance of our season ticket (for the new stadium) so I hit the companion voucher and the welcome bonus within the first week – small mercies eh? I am thinking of getting the Barclaycard for place that don’t take Amex so I’m always accruing points.
I am virgin gold so still get the voucher from them and I also bought loads of points a few weeks ago so I have a option to travel with either.

I’d certainly recommend the Amex.
