DAS for family member who is deaf

We are ongoing to Orlando next Autumn. We are taking a family member who is severely hearing impaired. She signs using Irish sign language and lip reads. She would have problems in a queue hearing instructions from a cast member, or others, even with hearing aids, as she has almost no hearing. She would obviously have to queue with another family member to assist her, and in darkened queuing areas, she would struggle. I hate asking about the DAS pass, as I appreciate it should only be for individuals with severe impairments that cannot queue. We are concerned for rides, that are in poorer lit areas. She has no issue doing the necessary DAS interview, with me, and I could sign the questions for her. Would she be eligible with a severe hearing impairment? She has all the necessary medical documentation, I know they do not wish to read those. I know it is down to the interview, but I suppose, I am just wondering are we wasting our time. Thank you.

Why would someone being deaf stop them from queuing? ‘Hearing instructions from cast members’? Problems in darkened queuing areas?
You stand in a queue and slowly shuffle along.
Sorry I’m not buying this at all.
I cant see them giving a DAS for this.

You can get a portable handheld captioning device from Disney to assist. There’s more info here. https://www.disneyworld.co.uk/guest-...f-hearingloss/

Thank you that would help immensely. That is all she would need, it would also help at the shows I see.

In a darkened area, it is much more difficult to lip read, or interpret sign language.

From what I have read online I don't think this would qualify under the new rules, the only way you will know if to try and ask. I don't recall any queue line being so dark you are unable to see a cast member. FOP is dark in areas but the loading area is lit same with 7DMT/Space Mountain.

They wouldn't qualify for DAS no but I would still contact them to discuss their accessibility offerings for them.

We live in Orlando and my daughter is part of the local deaf community. I have never heard of anyone getting a DAS for deafness even before the rules became much stricter.

I know ASL is very different but if your family member has any knowledge of it, I would suggest trying to book your park days around the ASL interpretered show times. Each park has 2 days per week (1 at EPCOT) where 1 showtime for each show has 2 interpreters. They are true performers and I often hear people who don't sign saying how much they enjoy watching them.

ASL is totally different to BSL , ASL is signed with one hand BSL with two , you couldn’t even sit and watch an interpreted ASL performance in ASL if you’re BSL they are like chalk and cheese ! .
I sign BSL , and have a little asl ( due to my copious visits ) and I can’t follow the interpreters . Yes they are great to watch , but to understand if you’re a profound BSL user ( according to my husband they are of no use )
