Dollar - warning! Oct 2024

Not long back from a fantastic 2 weeks in Orlando with one big problem experienced - Dollar rentals.

I had purchased insurance via a 3rd party prior to this booking. Initial booking was with auto Europe who were great.

When picking up the vehicle at MCO, I was asked about insurance - do you
need to add insurance or just the basic carhire. I told the staff member I did not require any insurance. I wasn't told of any extra charges or that I had bought anything. The only thing I was told was a hold was placed on my card which was fine.

First problem was the car only had half a tank of fuel. It didn't smell great either. My family were at a hotel
nearby where we stayed the previous night.
When they got in, they pointed out stains and 2 empty bottles in the back so car was clearly not valeted. I enquired about fuel but was
advised it was noted on their systems and I could return with half a tank.

When I returned the vehicle at the end of the holiday , I was advised that i had a payment of $320 for the
insurance I bought. I told them I did not buy this, and was told to go to the desk. At the desk, the guy could not care less and told me I needed
to email the company and they'll check the cameras and audio to confirm my version of events. I emailed that day and got a reply asking for more info. That was 11 days ago. Despite numerous emails, they have not
Got back to me.

I feel that this will be a battle I won't win. At no stage was I advised of any charges or insurance that was added.

So be warned if you are using dollar, if you do not require any extras, ask and check and ask again that these have not been added! I certainly will never use dollar again!

Can you raise a dispute with your credit card company? Your receipt should state no extra insurance so you will be able to prove that you didn’t purchase it.

Yes I have raised it with the card company but takes 6-8 weeks for the dispute so could be a while!

Yeah I didn't sign for anything. Which is probably why dollar aren't getting back to me. Can't refund me if they don't talk to me... lol

That would be a section 75. I would advise you to go back to your CC company and encourage them to action a chargeback, this reimburses you immediately and puts the onus on the company to prove the charge was legitimate to have the chargeback removed.

You would’ve signed before leaving the desk?

When they told you they were just putting a hold on and that was why there was an amount to sign for, they would’ve also slipped in the insurance. It’s the standard scam and why you have to read it all before signing if it doesn’t say zero at the end of the contract.

What does the print out say, anything other than $0.00 owed when you leave that barrier at parking is pretty much an agreement.

Sadly all companies try these sometimes. I had something with Hertz back in 2017. My exit paper work said $0.00 but when I returned the car I got a bill for $xxx.xx

Argued at the garage with similar results, they knew I had a plane to catch and they had more time than I did. Looking back on my emails,

"Having investigated your claim, it is clear that there was a processing error made by our location when you returned the vehicle. This has caused you to be charged at an incorrect rate, for which I sincerely apologize"

Keep at them, if you didn't sign for additional, and document showed $0.00 owed on exit.

Total estimate charge $
But under neath he has written $200 and an arrow pointing down under next line says credit card authorisation….

We returned to Dollar at Tampa last week and were told it would be emailed... we still haven't received it. Same with the contract, told it had been emailed after selecting a vehicle online, it didn't come through so I went to the desk and asked for it. I did ask the guy when we dropped off to confirm no extra charges so I hope what he said was correct. I'll try and chase the receipt online.
