Literally just in from a hospital appointment with my mum and the consultant told us the same thing. They're expecting a higher level of covid in the next few months, nothing like it was during the pandemic, but enough to cause concern. Especially for sick, elderly and other vulnerable people. The unit we were at today most patients were wearing masks, so I think I'll keep one or 2 in my bag for our next hospital visits.
She was checking to make sure I had been offered my booster as a carer to my mum. I told her even if I had to pay for it I would get it anyway, having watched a close friend in her 40's be in intensive care with covid, and even now 2 years on still strugggling to cope, learning to walk again etc. I'll take whatever's going. Covid has been doing the rounds in my area agin this past 4 weeks or so, so I've been extra vigilent, however her words today has made us more alert now. I would never forgive myself if I passed on something to anyone else and it ended badly for them. I couldn't have that on my conscience. |

Had both flu and covid (Pfizer) on the 11th October. I’m fully vaccinated including shingles and pneumonia. I’m currently having a course of B12 injections and the first one was yesterday and so much more painful when it was administered than Covid or flu. My husband wasn’t going to get the covid shot but changed his mind at the last minute. We’ve been fine apart from very painful arms.

These stats are rather interesting.
Between October 2023 and April 2024, as many as 75 million people got the flu in the U.S., according to CDC estimates, resulting in up to 900,000 hospitalizations and between 17,000 and 100,000 deaths. In 2023, about 900,000 Americans were hospitalized with COVID and 75,000 died. I never listen to doom mongers but I’m mindful of my age and that I smoked for donkeys years. As an aside my jab for Covid was administered in a huge NHS facility. 10 Nurses jabbing away in a most professional way and it was a well run machine. Maybe 40+ of us lining up and the amount never varied. In and out and a constant replacement of people. Not one mask did I see in the 30 mins I was there by us lot or the Nurses.

My husband and I had ours three weeks ago, both Covid and Flu our daughter has Lupus and this makes us both eligible.
We have always taken vaccines when offered, we would not even think about not having them. |

I take them. I’m already a drain on the NHS with long term health conditions so happy to take the recommended precautions against being a bigger problem to the system.

I’m not eligible. NHS worker only eligible for flu. I’d take it happily.

I need to get both flu and covid boosters sorted for myself... this thread was a good reminder!
The fact is that there have always been lots of Winter deaths due to these types of illness, but they are hidden because we say someone died of old age, heart, failure, COPD, pneumonia, etc... but they may have survived those things for much longer, or never even ended up in hospital, had they not had the illness. COVID brought awareness of these deaths to the fore, but a big part of the problem was always there, and hasn't gone away now that risks from COVID have diminished significantly (but not disappeared). The NHS doesn't shell out for all those flu / covid vacs for nothing, it's because they save lives, medical complications and hospital admissions and likely even save money.

They are fairly cheap to get done privately.
Also, if the GP surgery I work in have any left once all of the at risk groups have been offered we open them up to anyone that wants one rather than see them wasted. It does mean you get vaccinated a little later though, and not everywhere will offer this.
