I do think you should get another one though Sandra. It won’t replace poppy but it will help heal
There aren’t many times that I tell my husband that he was right but about 5/6 years ago he was trying to convince me to get another dog but I point blank refused. I didn’t think I could cope with the chaos of having a puppy as well as a rather large dog in a not so large house but I seriously regret thinking logically! Having another dog wouldn’t take away the pain we are feeling but I’m sure would help heal us and the house wouldn’t feel so empty.
Good luck in your hunt for a new pup

It’s lovely that you’ve all decided to give another furbaby a great home like Poppy had.

Would after christmas be better? Quiet time to settle in a new furbaby and something for you all to look forward to?

Christmas always seems so hectic or strange, people coming and going, deccies up etc.

Would a new furbaby settle better in a normal environment?

xx

I think it would be a shame if you didn't get another dog when the time feels right to you. X

Sandra I think a new puppy makes complete sense. You have a lot of love to give and lots of time to invest in raising and caring for it. 🩷 I would suggest waiting til the weather is a little warmer and not so wet so that it makes toilet training easier. Milo absolutely hates getting wet and I remember Adam standing outside with an umbrella over Milo’s head so he could wee and that was in May 2020 when we got him! 💕🐶

Getting another dog after…… is something I don’t like to think about, but I’m sure we will when the time comes as I can’t imagine not having a dog in the house now.
Ours will be 10 in May, we’ve had him since he was 8 weeks old. That time has flown by and it’s only natural we’ve talked about the future. He’s been a little unwell over the last week, at one point I was really worried about him - he’s almost back to his usual self now though thankfully.

I’m so glad you’ve decided to get another dog. They will be so lucky to have you as their family.
Don’t think about it as replacing Poppy, they won’t be. They’ll have a place in your heart alongside the place that Poppy occupies 🐾 ❤️ just like those who have multiple pets do.
She really was a bit of a feisty old bag but also really loveable. Gave me kisses, tapped me at night when she wanted a wee. I used to say poppy go to sleep so she lay next to me on my pillow and tapped me.😄 I eventually got up and I miss her funny behaviour so much. She bit the vet (not hard) at the end when he tried to get the needle for the final injection. 🫣 She's was saying don't you dare put that in me. 😭
Glad your doggy is better now xxx

I'm glad you have decided to get another pup .
We lost our 15 year old Parson Russell last July and we were heart broken. The house felt so empty and we really missed having a dog greeting us when we came back in the house. Just as I was getting used to a clean house again, several of my friends got new puppies so a dog was back in conversation.
And so we got Max .
In some ways, it's not a great idea to get a new puppy in Winter but there a good plus point to a Winter pup. As you probably know the recommended amount of walking for a new pup is quite small, 5 minutes per month, so during the winter we won't be taking him on big walks. However, in Spring, he will be old enough to go on longer walks in better weather (hopefully) so that is something to consider when deciding when is the right time. We feel a bit housebound at the moment so I wouldn't particularly like that in Spring/Summer.
Can't wait to see your new pup x

Thanks for starting this thread

I lost Kody ( husky x GSD) who was almost 12 in July this year.
I live on my own as DH died 8 hrs ago and DS moved out a couple of years back when he got married.
It’s the first time I’ve ever been in a house alone.
No one to say hello to in the morning and no one who is pleased to see me first thing. No one to sit with me in the evening.
In the past we had 2 show cocker spaniels and a Dalmatian prior to Kody but there was always an overlap with the dogs so this is the first time for many years without a dog. I’ve got tropical fish but it’s not really the same.

I did apply to foster dogs with a spaniel charity and passed the interview and then failed the home check as I have a pond in the garden so the house was classes as being unsafe for dogs. Over the years I’ve never had a dog in the pond ( a friend stepped back in to it after a few drinks but that’s another story). I was expecting to be advised that I needed a new back gate which I’d already got a quote to have done , but haven’t as yet.

I then looked in to getting a rescue dog as I wouldn’t mind getting an older dog & the same charity wouldn’t let me adopt from them due to the pond.

Another charity wouldn’t consider me as I have a paved and decked garden and stone area around the pond and declined me as I don’t have any grass in the back garden.

I work 3 days a week usually half a day from home with some visits in the afternoon. Kody had a dog flap into the garden for the past few years but when he was younger he had a fantastic dog walker who would take him out so the longest he was alone for was 2 hrs.
Another rescue charity wouldn’t consider me as I was sometimes out of the house for more than 4 hrs in a 24 hr period, even though I was happy to employ a dog walker/ walks / welfare check for the 3 days that I would be working. I know there are overseas rescues but I’ve heard varied reports as to how helpful they are and horror stories about some of the dogs supplied. Kody’s mum Sasha was a rescue husky/ GSD from Romania who joined Murphy a fully intact husky & his owners. Sasha was supplied as being neutered, fully vaccinated , wormed etc with all the paperwork to confirm this. Well a few months later Sasha seemed to be getting a bit portly and a while later 8 fur baby’s arrived.
Another friend’s daughter had a similar situation where they realised that the dog was pregnant when she was renamed by them despite the charity confirming that they had neutered her. In this case the charity wanted to take the puppies once born which they were refused in no uncertain terms.

Kody was a big strong dog and to be honest I think I would like a smaller dog going forward.
I’m not sure about getting a puppy but it may be the only option open to me. I keep looking at mainly show cocker spaniels, corgi’s, westie’s and I looked at a few Dalmatian s which are quite big.

I’m on holiday from next weekend so may see after that.

What have others done?

There are alot of rescues out there, some with some rather strange 'rules' ( we were turned down by a Romanian rescue because our garden was too cluttered - too many plants
I would recommend either of the rescues I got my 2 from, both are professional , thorough with vaccinations, neutering, transport etc and they have realistic requirements.
SpanishStrayDogsUk and Rescuedog4u ( Precious pups Bulgaria)
The Spanish rescue also occasionally needs foster homes .

My parents are in westie no:6 and they were all different and had their own wee personalities. None of them had skin issues. I know they are prone to it but they seem to be lucky. I wouldn’t ever recommend anyone get a poodle cross. I don’t agree with encouraging greeders. There is no guarantee what you are getting. They also are prone to separation anxiety and can be wild. Getting one after having a westie would be a bit of a culture shock. They also need a lot more grooming than a westie. What about a poodle or maybe a wee cavalier King Charles they are very calm quiet wee dogs however can be prone to seizures later in life. The problem with these poo crosses is you could get the best of both or the worst. Some can be aggressive.

The other benefits of a winter puppy is they sleep slightly longer. We brought our munchkin home in July, and if either of us breathed post 5am when it was light the little monkey was wide awake and ready to play 😂
It’s inconceivable now as he loves his kip but there were an awful lot of early mornings 😂

I have allergies so there's only some dog breeds I can have. Our neighbour has a cockapoo after having a Portuguese water dog who hated people. The dog is very pleasant and laid back, we wouldn't get a full size one anyway I want a small dog. Id want to see the mother and know their temperament. Our westie used to use to be a feisty one, she loved you on her terms x
