Please can anyone advise on where is best to purchase insurance. we go October 2021, My husband has hypertension and asthma which need to be declared. however, we are booked with tui, if we were unable to go as not allowed, I guess tui would refund us. so do we just need to get insurance for other circumstances? Any recommendations for companies to purchase it from.
Thank you |

I guess that you'll get a number of recommendations for travel insurance but yes basically you're correct in saying that if Tui cancel your flights they are legally obliged to give you a full refund. They may try to get away with a voucher for future travel but you are within your rights to refuse it.
We're both 74 and both post-cancer and I test the market every May for our annual renewal. The best for us recently has been Staysure Comprehensive although we do pay over £850 mainly because of our age and PEMCs. It provides cancellation cover if you cancel through catching Covid within 14 days of travel. Also unlimited medical cover if you catch Covid whilst abroad UNLESS you travel against FCO advice. There are companies out there who apparently cover Covid cancellation at any time - maybe some Dibbers have experience of these. Mick

Now would be a good time if booking to make sure your insurance includes end supplier failure and pay with a credit card. As you say TUI should be your first line of defence in terms of refunds, so read their “Covid cancellation policy” carefully.
I was on the phone to Aviva this morning who underwrite my current account linked policy. Our flights to Finland at Christmas have been cancelled and wanted to understand where I stood if rebooking the hotel, as hotel have offered rebooking or voucher but at the moment no cash refund. They confirmed anything booked whilst restrictions in place is not covered for Covid cancellation but would be for other issues, the one exception was if I rebooked the hotel in order to minimise loss they would continue to provide full cover, but wouldn’t extend that to a voucher or in fact to new flights! Also if hotel later offered cash refund and I chose to rebook they wouldn’t cover the rebooking if restrictions were in place at time of rebooking. I’m only mentioning this as it’s all clearly a very complicated situation with insurance so make sure you know very clearly what is covered! |
