Swollen ankles...Hmmmmm
Hi All!
Back two weeks ago from an AMAZING 2 week cruise sailing from Singapore up to Dubai via Thailand, Oman and India... ahhhh... seems like a distant memory already But just been reminded of something I wanted to ask on this knowledgeable forum when I got back - Why oh why do my ankles always swell whenever I am on a cruise? Do other people find this? I don't tend to get swollen ankles after a flight usually, and besides they always develop a day or two into a cruise. 2 or 3 days in and boom - there they are - cartoon ankles! Lots of fellow passengers had this problem too, all equally clueless as to why. I did read it was to do with the desalination process onboard but others poo-pooed that idea. Any insights? Or fellow sufferers wanting a moan?

Perhaps you aren’t moving as much?

It's not that. I do move an awful lot on a cruise.
I never suffer from swollen ankles at home where I sometimes move a lot less than on a cruise. It's not the heat either as I'm not a sun worshipper so keep to AC areas generally. The mystery remains...

Hmm - very strange. Perhaps it’s something to do with the movement of the ship and your ankles having to work to balance you

I did a quick google and the general consensus is that it’s related to the large amount of salt in the food 🤷

That would explain it!
I get very swollen ankles when away both in Disney and also I noticed it on our last cruise. I don’t add salt to cooking at all at home so I imagine the amount of salt I consume while on holiday is a huge % higher than usual. 🤔
