How did the Keys fare ?

Hi all,

As above really. Searching the 'net today, suggests that Key West remained relatively unscathed but what about the rest ?

Seems a bit churlish to ask this question but we have seafront accommodation booked at Seafarer in Key Largo next Easter [ yes, I know it is a long way off ] and, to a layman's eyes the rooms don't look the most substantial of structures.

Slight panic is setting in with the OH (and myself to some extent) about what to do. Don't obviously want to start emailing the resort at this stage but what if we do need to start re-planning and rebooking ?

Anyone got any ideas/advice ?

From what I have heard on CNN Key West is far from unscathed.

As it stands at the moment the Keys have no power and no water and they have been unable to establish the condition of the Overseas Highway so there may well be damage to bridges. They are organising some sort of airborne rescue and reconnaissance mission this morning which will give them a clearer idea of what is happening.

I think it may take some time for things to recover there sadly.

According to USA today Key West got slammed:

Some communities are going to take quite a while to get back to normal - poor souls.

That's very odd.

The first result from Googling "Key West hurricane damage" is miamiherald/news/weat...172503266.html which suggests Key West fared far better than the rest of the keys.

I followed a few storm chasers and watched various news channels all the way through and the Keys definitely got slammed!

I saw this earlier and it broke my heart. I believe Marathon may have been one of the worst areas. Apparently Big Pine Key has been cut off. It all makes me so sad - and I'm worried about the deer and the chickens and the turtles. Yikes. It also makes me want to abandon my West Coast plans and go back to the Keys next Easter and support them.

We visited five weeks ago and loved it there, plans to go back to Key West next year. I was trying all of yesterday to find out about the damage but it went very quiet (understandably) for the rest of the afternoon.

Does anyone know if the guy who was live streaming from the boat is okay?

The key west chickens were transported off the island a few days ago.

I think Marathon took the brunt. Even if KW got off lightly it's getting down there that could be the problem.
When we drove there I was amazed that there is only one way on and one way out.
